POMONA, N.Y. – Manhattan walked it off once again at Clover Stadium. This time, after 13 innings of baseball between Manhattan and Fordham,
Daniel Perez delivered an RBI single to send Manhattan home with a 13-12 win in the team's final nonconference game of the season.
This was the first extra-inning game between the two rivals since 2017. This also will go down in the record books as the longest game between the two schools, with the first game occurring all the way back in 1870. Prior to that, the longest game was in 2001 when the teams battled for 12 innings but Fordham emerged on top.
Manhattan (19-31) now gets one day of rest before returning to the diamond for its final MAAC series of the year against Rider, with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m. on Thursday from Clover Stadium.
The teams entered the 10th inning deadlocked at 10-10. Fordham got off to the start they wanted in extras, with the first batter of the extra frame, Tommy McAndrews, taking
Ohjiro Motoki for a ride to left field for a solo home run and an 11-10 lead.
Manhattan would get the run back in interesting fashion.
Jack Lynch led the inning off with a double to center field, which was followed up by
Alfredo Delgado walk.
Ryan Ash proceeded to enter the game for Delgado as a pinch runner. Perez singled to load the bases to bring up
Trevor Hansen. Hansen hit a ground ball to the shortstop who threw out Ash at third. The third basement then threw it home, thinking it would get Lynch out on the force out, but because Ash was out, the force out was gone and Lynch scored the Rams did not tag him, making the score 11-11.
Fordham threatened again in the 11th inning, but
John Kwiatkowski, who entered the game for Motoki in the tenth, worked out of the jam.
Fordham struck again in the 12th, stringing together some base hits to plate one run. Manhattan came up to bat in the home half of the 11th and led things off with a
Nick Plue walk, who pinch-hit for Ash to open the inning. Perez utilized a sac bunt to move Plue over into scoring position. This time, Hansen delivered an RBI single to tie things up and keep the Jaspers in the game, 12-12.
Kwitkowski got through the top of the 13th without incident, and with the top of the order due up for Manhattan, things were looking up.
Frankie Marinelli singled to start the inning. He moved to second after
Logan Pfannenbecker was awarded first after being hit by an errant pitch. The Rams got
Pete Durocher to return to the dugout on strikes and Lynch to fly out, bringing up Plue again. Plue drew another walk and set the table for Perez. Perez took a 1-0 pitch and split the first and second basemen to bring home Marinelli and send the Jaspers home with the win.
Durocher finished the game with four hits and five RBI while Steven Traveglini delivered a pair of hits.
Trevor Santos cleared the short porch for the third time this season for a two-run home run earlier in the game.
McAndrews finished the game with two home runs, including a grand slam in the seventh to tie the game at 10-10 and five RBI.
