STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Manhattan earned a split with Wagner on Wednesday afternoon on Staten Island.
The win in game two for the Jaspers snapped a losing streak for Manhattan.
Game 1: Wagner 2, Manhattan 1
Runs were at a premium in game one between Manhattan and Wagner. All the scoring came in the sixth inning.
Manhattan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning.
Megan Hedlund drove in her 10
th run of the season with a single to center field.
Lauren Rende scored after getting aboard via a single.
The lead was short-lived, though, for the Jaspers. Samantha Tran scored the tying run for the Seahawks when she touched home on a fielder's choice. Kate Wolf brought in the eventual winning run with a two-out double to right center.
Sophia Kiseloski started for the Jaspers and went six innings. The right-hander struck out four and only allowed one hit over the first four innings.
Eve Harvey collected the win for the Seahawks. The graduate student scattered six hits and allowed the one earned run.
Gabriella Mazzotta was the lone hitter on either side to get multiple hits, finishing 2-3.
Game 2: Manhattan 9, Wagner 0 (5 Innings)
Manhattan scored three in the second and added six more in the fourth to collect the run-rule win to split the doubleheader.
Gabriella Mazzotta started the scoring with a double to center bringing
Maddy Weir and
Gabi Mills home. Mazzotta, who finished the game 3-4 with two RBI and runs scored, came around to score on a double steal later in the inning.
The Jaspers needed only three hits to score their six runs in the fourth.
Tajiana Pickett had the lone hit that brought in runs. The sophomore drove in a pair with a single that squeaked through the Seahawks' third baseman and into left field. That made it 6-0 Manhattan. The following two runs were forced in by bases-loaded walks to Weir and
Lindsey Hoag. Weir finished the scoring when she touched home after a wild pitch.
In the circle for Manhattan was
Marika Deemer. The senior picked up her first win of the season with the shutout. Deemer only allowed four baserunners and struck out two.
Emma Crosby allowed six runs to score in the fourth. Crosby walked six Jaspers and allowed only three hits.
Mazzotta's three hits extended her hitting streak to five games.
The Jaspers return to action on Saturday at home against Fairfield for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
