NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Manhattan women's basketball team was defeated by Iona Saturday afternoon, 63-49, at the Hynes Center. Iona's win snapped the Jaspers' 11-game win streak over the Gaels.
The Green and White drop to 7-13 overall and 4-7 in MAAC play. The Gaels stay in first place while improving to 15-5 on the year and 10-1 in league play.
The Gaels hopped out to a double-digit lead early, scoring on their first three trips down the floor to open the game. Manhattan responded with back-to-back buckets from
Christina Katsamouri followed by a
Narrie Dodson jumper to make the score 12-8 heading into the first media timeout.
Iona steadily created space, building the lead to 30-19 at the half getting the lead up to 45-29 by the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Jaspers' offense came alive and managed to close the gap to as little as nine on a couple of occasions, but could never get any closer. The quarter opened with
Jade Blagrove finishing through contact for an and-one opportunity. She hit the free throw to make the score 45-32. The lead became single digits with 4:49 left, but the Gaels responded 6-2 run to keep the Jaspers at bay.
During the fourth, Dodson served as a catalyst for the team, scoring seven of her nine points in the final stanza. She turned in her first double-digit rebounding performance at Manhattan, hauling in 10, five offensive and five defensive.
For the second game in a row, Manhattan dominated the offensive glass, securing 24 and winning the overall rebounding battle, 47-30.
Manhattan returns to action next Thursday with the Fairfield Stags coming to Riverdale. That game will feature a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Title XI in addition to honoring the first-ever women's basketball team to compete at the varsity level for Manhattan.
