LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Manhattan men's track and field team finished fourth at the 2022 MAAC Championships.
Manhattan finished with 79 points. Monmouth won its eighth straight title with 263 points.
The Jaspers picked up a pair of individual champions over the two-day championships, Anu Awonusi in the shot put on Sunday and RJ Decker in the hammer on Saturday.
Awonusi claimed the victory in the discus with a best of 45.19m, which came on his last attempt to clip Jack Stuart of Monmouth by less than one meter. It is the first MAAC Championship win for the graduate student.
Peter Athanailos finished eighth (41.09m) to score points for the Jaspers in the discus.
Manhattan picked up a pair of third-place finishes on Sunday. Pelle Nogueira was third in the 5k after finishing second in the 10k on Saturday, and Marc Carrera was third in the 800m on Sunday. Nogueira ran a 14:33.04, an IC4A qualifying mark, to score six points for the Jaspers. Carrera ran close to a second faster in the finals (1:51.64) than he did in the prelims in the 800m. The time is an IC4A qualifying time.
The Jaspers also collected four fourth-place finishes, two fifths, three sixths, and an eighth.
Awonusi finished fourth in the shot put (14.70m). The men also finished fourth in all three relays.
In the 4x100, the team of Kaya Simpson, Dean Niosi, Darion Lopez, and Larry McCullum were 0.05 off the podium in fourth with a 41.62, which is an IC4A qualifying time. The 4x400 saw the Jaspers run faster than their seed time with a 3:20.24, less than two seconds off the podium, from the foursome of Quemari Williams, Darion Lopez, Harrison Alonzo, and Travis Delaney. The 4x800 team of Carrera, Dom Boccia, Justin Jordaens, and Ryan Tierney finished in a time of 7:44.46.
Individually, Lopez finished fifth in the 400m on Sunday (49.95), Simpson finished sixth in the 110m (15.25) and 400m (58.11) hurdles, and Delaney was eighth in the 800m (1:56.08). Simpson's time in the 110m hurdles was a new personal best.
David Lozipone joined Nogueira in the top five of the 5k with a fifth-place finish (14:40.04).
Up next for the Jasper men are the IC4A Championships, for those who qualified, on May 14 and 15 at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
