BURLINGTON, Vt. – The historic 2022 season for Manhattan came to a close in a 15-3 loss to Vermont in Wednesday's Opening Round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Jaspers were making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 20 years.
Manhattan (8-7) scored first through
Kyle Gucwa less than three minutes in. Gucwa's tally was his 31
st of the season.
Sean MacKinney assisted the goal, which Gucwa scored on the second shot of the game for the Jaspers.
The next eight goals would all go to Vermont. Liam Limoges started the run with his 29
th of the season less than a minute after Gucwa scored. Thomas McConvey ended the stretch with his third of the run and the game with 10:04 left in the second.
Liam Walshe ended the Catamounts run with his 27
th of the year with 9:26 to play before halftime. The senior found some space inside the Vermont defense and put home a feed from
Jake Nicolosi.
After four straight from Catamounts, Walshe would score his second of the night with 9:23 remaining in the third to make it 11-3. It was the ninth time this season that Walshe had scored at least twice.
Vermont added the game's final four goals to reach the final scoreline. McConvey and Michael McCormack finished five goals and an assist for the Catamounts. In goal, Ryan Cornell made 13 saves.
Brendan Krebs made 14 stops on 29 shots on goal by the Catamounts in goal for the Jaspers. Vermont only missed the net six times all night. Krebs' 14 stops were the most since Mar. 26 against St. Bonaventure. The graduate student added a team-high six ground balls.
