NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Manhattan men's track and field team won the Metropolitan Championships on Saturday at Icahn Stadium. The Jaspers scored 118 points to clear the field by 11.5.
The Jaspers won the 1500m, 5000m, and shot put on Saturday. Manhattan also recorded additional top-five finishes in the 1500m, 110m hurdles, 4x100m, 4x400m, 4x800m, long jump, discus, and javelin.
Marc Carrera won the 1500m in a time of 3:58.08. Ryan Tierney made it two Jaspers in the top five with a fifth-place finish, 2.2 seconds behind Carrera.
Pelle Nogueira and David Lozipone finished 1-2 in the 5000m. Nogueira crosses the line in 14:40.20 with Lozipone 1.21 seconds behind.
Anu Awonusi took the top spot in the shot put. The graduate student posted a best of 16.21m, an IC4A qualifying mark. Awonusi also finished fourth in the discus (44.61m), and Peter Athanailos followed in fifth (43.60m).
The 4x100m relay team of Kaya Simpson, Dean Niosi, Darion Lopez, and Larry McCullum finished second with a 42.29, meeting the IC4A qualifying standard. Manhattan also finished second in the 4x800m relay with Carrera, Tierney, Travis Delaney, and Dom Boccia clocking a 7:53.63. The team of Lopez, Harrison Alonzo, Noah Jefferson, and Brian Oduor was third in the 4x400m relay (3:21.16).
In other field events, Manhattan took fourth in the long jump through Oduor's best jump of 6.60m. RJ Decker finished fourth in the javelin after posting a 44.35m.
Manhattan returns to action on April 23 at the Rider Invitational.
