Men's Track & Field Win Metropolitan Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Manhattan men's track and field team won the 2022 Metropolitan Championships on Friday afternoon. The Jaspers won with 111 points to clip Fordham by six.

Manhattan recorded three wins on Friday afternoon. Marc Carrera won the mile, David Lozipone took first in the 3000m, and RJ Decker took top honors in the weight throw.

The Jaspers recorded six other top-three finishes to help secure the team title.

Carrera won in a time of 4:16.67 to win 1.1 seconds. The senior also led three Jaspers inside the top five of the 800m. Behind Carrera in third was Travis Delaney in fourth and Justin Jordaens in fifth. The trio scored 15 points.

Lozipone's time of 8:25.78 to win the 3000m was fast enough to hit the IC4A standard for the Massapequa Park, N.Y. native. Pelle Nogueira was third in 3000m (8:29.30). The duo scored 16 points for Manhattan.

Decker also hit an IC4A mark on Friday. The sophomore recorded an 18.52m—new best in the MAAC—effort to win by exactly one meter. This season, it was the fifth win for Decker, who is unbeaten when he records a mark. Joseph Pelio was sixth in the weight throw (14.49m) to make it a pair of point scorers for the Jaspers.

Manhattan finished in the top three in all three relays too. The Jaspers were second in the 4x800 and the DMR and third in the 4x400. The 4x800 time of 7:53.85 turned in by Carrera, Jordaens, Ryan Tierney, Travis Delany is the best in the MAAC this season. Michael Hennelly, who featured on the DMR team, finished second in the 5000m in 15:18.25.

Dorian Lopez scored in the 200m and 400m for Manhattan. Harrison Alonzo scored in the 400m in seventh and featured on the 4x400 relay team. Peter Ackermann was eighth in the 500m and was a member of the DMR. Tierney was fifth in the 1000m, individually.

The Jaspers return to track on Feb. 11 and 12 at the Monmouth Invitational.
