Manhattan Drops Season Opener to No. 13 Notre Dame

DELAND, Fla. – Manhattan opened the 2022 season on Friday night with a 17-2 loss to No. 13 Notre Dame.
 
Manhattan (0-1) left a pair of runners on in the first inning, and then added two runs in the ninth Frankie Marinelli singled with one away, and Matt Padre walked with two outs to bring up Harrison Treble. Treble struck out swinging to end the frame.
 
Notre Dame (1-0) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Leadoff batter Spencer Myers tripled and then was brought home by a sacrifice fly. Carter Putz followed with a second triple in the inning, then scored off a single from DM Jefferson.  
 
The Fighting Irish plated five in the third and six more in the fourth. Connor O'Neill kept Notre Dame off the scoreboard in the fifth before the Fighting Irish added three more in the sixth to lead 16-0.
 
In the ninth, the Jaspers got back-to-back walks from Harrison Treble and Pete Durocher to start. Jack Lynch then doubled to right on the first pitch he saw, which brought in Lewi Clake—pinch ran for Treble. Durocher scored on a groundout.
 
Tyler Fagler got the start for the Jaspers and went three innings. The graduate student struck out four while allowing seven runs.
 
Manhattan is back in action tomorrow at noon in DeLand against Delaware.
