Box Score WASHINGTON D.C. – The Manhattan women's basketball team took a trip down to the nation's capital this week for a non-conference matchup with the George Washington Colonials. The Jaspers fell on the road, 68-56.
Manhattan falls to 2-6 overall, while GW improves to 6-5 overall.
"Tough road loss to a very experienced George Washington team," said head coach
Heather Vulin. "We were very disappointing on the boards and I feel that was the difference in this game. Games where we control the boards we give ourselves a chance to compete and tonight we did not do that tonight. We need to learn from this and gear up for starting MAAC play next Saturday."
In the opening 10 minutes, the Jaspers rushed out to a 23-12 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 17-4 run, which featured
Bella Nascimento scoring all eight of her first-quarter points during the run and
Anne Bair converting on an and-one.
GW was not deterred by the early hole, coming out in the second quarter and outscoring the Green and White 22-9 to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room, which included a 9-2 run to close out the half.
The third quarter was a battle, with neither team able to establish a foothold offensively. The Colonials connected on a half-court heave by Nya Lok as time expired to take a 47-43 lead into the closing final 10 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, George Washington created space, getting the lead up to double digits and never letting it get back down.
Nascimento finished with double figures in the points column for the fourth consecutive game, contributing 10 points.
Jade Blagrove posted double figures for the first time this year, adding 10 points and securing eight rebounds.
The Buff & Blue did what few teams could do, out-rebound the Jaspers, hauling in 46 compared to the Jaspers 31. Mayowa Taiwo hauled in 17 boards in route to a double-double with 12 points.
The Jaspers return to Draddy for the team's MAAC opener, welcoming the newest member of the conference, Mount St. Mary's to Riverdale on Saturday, Dec. 17 with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m.
