Jaspers Record Six Wins at MLK Tribute Invitational

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Manhattan men's track and field team hit the track for the first time in 2022 at the MLK Tribute Invitational hosted by St. John's at the Ocean Breeze Complex.

The men posted five individual wins and a relay win on Monday.

Harrison Alonzo won the 300m in 35.95. Jackson Heft took the top spot in the pole vault (3.55m). Anu Awonusi won the shot put with a mark of 15.85m. Robert Decker finished first in the weight throw (17.30m). Marc Carrera crossed the line in first in 1:55.79 to win the 800m. The Jaspers won the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:29.11.

Alonzo was two-tenths in front of teammate Brain Saul in the 300m to make it a 1-2 of Manhattan freshmen.

Awonusi's winning mark came on his second throw. The graduate student was over two meters clear of teammate Peter Athanailos in second. Decker's win was by more than three meters. Decker led a 1-2-3 finish of Jaspers. Joseph Pelio was second and Athanailos was third.  

The quartet of Brian Odour, Kaya Simpson, Saul, and Alonzo won the 4x400. They were over nine seconds clear of the second. Simpson was fifth in the 60m finals (7.14).

The Jaspers also recorded top-three finishes in the mile (Michael Hennelly), long jump (Odour), and the 800m (Travis Delaney & Justin Jordaens).

The Jaspers return to the track on Friday at Ocean Breeze for the NYC Gotham Cup.
