Hackensack, NJ – The Manhattan Volleyball team dropped both matches on Saturday at the FDU Tournament presented by Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Paramus.
Match Two (Maryland Eastern Shore)
Maryland Eastern Shore held off a late-charge Jasper outfit by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-22.
Senior Julia Menocal paced the Green & White with seven kills, on .278 hitting, while graduate student Erin Hoener added four kills, on .333 hitting, and two blocks.
Sophomore Ashley Chan had a team-best three aces and nine digs to round out the statistical leaders.
Down 23-12 in the third and final set, Manhattan made things interesting in ripping off eight-straight points, including seven with Chan serving. Unfortunately, the Hawks would stop the bleeding with back-to-back points to end the match.
Match One (Robert Morris)
Manhattan dropped a hard-fought, three-set decision to Robert Morris in its first match of the day, by scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-17.
After Robert Morris took the first set, the Colonials were in cruise control in the second set thanks to opening up an 18-10 lead.
However, the Jaspers responded with eight-straight points, fueled in large part by the serving of senior Abby Wilde. Unfortunately, the Colonials answered with a 6-2 spurt before the Jaspers made one final push.
The Green & White tied it up at 24-24 with four-straight, highlighted by a pair of Hoener kills. However, Robert Morris would recover to take the set with back-to-back points.
In the third set, the Colonials opened up an early 6-2 advantage and never looked back in clinching the match.
Hoener had a solid match, rapping out a team-best 10 kills, on .450 hitting.
Menocal had eight kills with three blocks, while Wilde had a team-best 20 assists with four kills to round out the top statistical performers.
Manhattan will next play at Delaware State on Tuesday, August 31 at 6:00 pm.
