Manhattan Heads To Buffalo For MAAC Championship

- No. 6 Manhattan (19-14) will open up play in the Championship round of 2021 MAAC Championship against No. 4 Fairfield on Thursday, May 13 at 3:00 pm at the Demske Sports Complex. 

The Worldwide Leader
The entire MAAC Softball Championship will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

How We Got Here
* Manhattan took two of three from Iona in last week's MAAC Quarterfinal Round.
* The Jaspers won the opener by a 6-2 count, before dropping game two 3-1. 
* Manhattan then erupted for season-highs in runs (11) and hits (13) in winning the series with an 11-5 victory in the finale.
* Junior Annie Moore hit a blistering .600 (6-of-10) with a home run, five RBI and four runs against Golden Griffin pitching, while sophomore Marika Deemer checked in at .545 (6-for-11) with three RBI and two runs.
* Sophomore Gabriella Mazzotta batted .333 (3-for-9) with a home run and three runs, while senior Victoria Alonso also hit .333 (3-for-9) with five RBI.
* In the third and deciding game, Moore was 4-for-5 with four RBI, while Alonso  also drove in four runs.
* Graduate student Nicole Williams struck out 11 in a complete-game effort in the opener, before striking out three over 5.1 innings in the finale and was the pitcher of record in both games.
* Williams is now 3-3 with 29 strikeouts and a 2.54 ERA over 30.1 innings in MAAC Championship play.

Road Warriors
* Manhattan are 13-8 on the road this season, compared to 6-6 at home.

Close Calls
* The Jaspers are an impressive 9-6 in games decided by two runs or less.
* The Green & White is also 3-0 in extra-inning affairs.

Championship Notes:
  • Manhattan qualified for the MAAC Championship for the first time since 2018.
  • In the 2018 MAAC Tournament, senior Daniela Chiorazzi hit .333 (5-of-15) with two RBI and a run.
  • In the 2017 MAAC Tournament, graduate student Christine Gebhardt batted .300 (3-of-10) with a run and a RBI
  • Head Coach Tom Pardalis is making his eighth appearance in the MAAC Softball Championship, and holds a 10-15 all-time record.
  • Pardalis will be squaring off against the Stags for the first time in his career.
  • In 2009, the year before Pardalis started, the teams last met in the MAAC Championship with No. 2 Manhattan defeating No. 1 Fairfield 5-3 in an elimination game.
  • Pardalis has a 1-2 career record against Canisius in MAAC Championship play.
  • No. 3 Manhattan defeated No. 1 Canisius 2-1 in a 2015 MAAC Championship elimination game.
  • The Jaspers were last the No. 6 seed in 2014, and advanced to the finals before losing to Iona.
  • Manhattan will be looking for its first MAAC Championship since 1999.

* This year, Williams (Monmouth) claimed MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors, while Moore (Canisius/QU) and Chirorazzi (Niagara) each won MAAC Player of the Week accolades.

This Year Against Fairfield ...
* Manhattan dropped three-of-four to Fairfield in its MAAC season-opening series back in March.
* The Jaspers won the fourth game by a 6-1 margin, after dropping the first three by scores of 8-0, 4-3 and 6-1.
* Junior Vani Patel hit .636 (7-for-11) while classmate Jessie Rising checked in with a .556 average (5-for-9).
* Deemer logged 5.2 innings of scoreless relief, while senior Kali Puppolo earned the first Green & White win of the year, striking out three over 6.1 solid innings of one-run ball.

This Year Against Canisius ...
* Canisius took three-of-four games thanks to limiting the Manhattan offense to just seven runs.
* The Golden Griffins won the opener 10-0, before the Jaspers rallied for a 6-2 triumph in the nightcap.
* Canisius then captured the series by winning Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 8-1 and 2-0.
* Moore hit .545 (6-fo-11) with a double, run, RBI and a walk en route to posting a .615 OBP.
* Mazzotta also had a solid weekend, going 4-for-7 (.571) at the plate.
* Rising earned the lone Manhattan win, striking out four over 6.2 innings of two-run, three-hit ball.
* Deemer was solid all weekend in relief, striking out five while yielding just two hits over 5.0 frames.
* Alonso, Gebhardt and Rende all also homered for the Jaspers.

If You're Not First, You're Last
* Manhattan is first in the MAAC and 24th nationally with a .975 field percentage.

In The Rankings
* Deemer is second in the MAAC with a 1.89 ERA.
* She is also second in the MAAC and 63rd nationally with fewest hits per seven innings (4.92), while Williams is sixth in the league 78th nationally with 5.1 hits per seven innings.
* Williams' 10 wins and 82 strikeouts are third in the MAAC, while her 2.32 ERA is sixth. 
* Chiorazzi's five home runs are tied for fourth in the MAAC, to go along with a team-best 18 RBI.

Other Team Leaders
* Gebhardt is the lone Jasper to play in and start all 33 games, and is batting .259 (28-of-108) with a team-best 19 runs, five doubles, one triple, two home runs and eight RBI.
* Sophomore Lauren Rende has a team-best nine extra-base hits, fueled by a team-leading seven doubles.
* Mazzotta registered a team-best nine stolen bases.

In The Record Books ...
* Williams is seventh in school history with 32 wins, and third with 339 strikeouts.
* With 10 more she will match Amy Bright for second place with 349 punchouts.
* Gebhardt is fifth in program history with 35 doubles, seventh with seven triples and ninth with 173 hits.

Coach Pardalis Quick Hits
* In this his 12th season at the helm of the Jaspers, Pardalis is 273-273-1.
* In 2017, Pardalis led Manhattan to a school-record 34 wins.
* The season prior, he guided the Jaspers to 30 victories, including a pre-Covid-19 school-record 14 during MAAC play, which was the Green & White's first 30-win season in 23 years.
* In 2015, he mentored unanimous MAAC Player of the Year Elena Bowman, as she became just the second player in program history to receive the award, and the first since Jennifer Drum in 1995. 
* He was inducted into the Connecticut Scholastic and Collegiate Softball Hall of Fame in 2019.
