Riverdale, NY - Monmouth staved off a gritty Manhattan squad by a 15-11 count on Senior Day at Gaelic Park.
* Senior Alaina Burgess (Holden, MA / The Governor's Academy) kickstarted the offense for the Jaspers with two early scores, before assisting junior Megan Rodino (Natick, MA / Natick) on the third Green & White goal.
* Senior Carmella Liscio (Blauvelt, NY / Tappen Zee) and junior Grace Lipponer (Lake Grove, NY / Sachem North) followed with back-to-back goals to draw Manhattan even at 5-5 with 10:40 to play in the stanza while capping a 4-1 spurt.
* Unfortunately, Monmouth would score eight of the next nine goals in taking a 13-6 lead with 26:22 to play.
* The Jaspers would respond with three-straight as Burgess notched her third score of the game and Liscio registered back-to-back goals in making it a 13-9 game with just over 16 minutes remaining.
* However, that would be as close as Manhattan would get as after Monmouth responded with two goals, Burgess picked up her fourth goal and sophomore Caroline D'Agostino (Stafordville, NY / Our Lady of Lourdes) her first career score to account for the final 15-11 score.
* Burgess led the way with four goals and two assists, while Liscio had three goals and three ground balls.
* Lipponer rounded out the multi-goal scorers with two goals and an assist.
* Graduate students Deb Peifer (Collegeville, PA / Methacton) and Amanda Silvestri (Pomona, NY / Albertus Magnus) matched Liscio with three ground balls apiece.
* Thanks to the trio, Manhattan registered a 21-12 advantage in ground balls.
* Sophomore Ashley Gambardella (Bethpage, NY / Plainedge) made nine saves with two ground balls in goal.
* The Jaspers fall to 0-8, while the Hawks improve to 7-2.
* Manhattan will play at Iona on Wednesday, April 21 at 3:00 pm.
