Niagara Falls, NY - Manhattan split its series-opening doubleheader at Niagara, winning game one by a 5-4 count, before dropping the finale by a score of 9-7.
With the split, the Jaspers are now 12-8 while the Purple Eagles are 5-9.
Game One
* Senior Daniela Chiorazzi (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) was the story in the opener, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI in leading the Green & White to a 5-4 victory.
* Niagara opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning, before Manhattan got them back in the third with a two-out rally.
* Junior Annie Moore (Northridge, CA / El Camino Real) singled before Chiorazzi crushed a two-run home run to draw the Jaspers even at 2-2.
* In the top of fifth, sophomore Gabriella Mazzotta (Somers, NY / Somers) led off with a single, before Moore drew a one-out walk and Chiorazzi again delivered the big blow with a three-run shot that staked the visitors to a 5-2 advantage.
* The Purple Eagles would get two runs back in the seventh but no closer in dropping the 5-4 decision.
* Chiorazzi finished up 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI to pace a seven-hit Manhattan offense.
* Junior Jessie Rising (Little Egg Harbor, NJ / Pinelands) improved to 4-3 on the year with the win, striking out five while yielding two runs on four hits and two walks over 4.0 innings.
* Graduate student Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT / St. Joseph's) earned the save, striking out six over 3.0 innings of two-run relief.
Game Two
* Niagara scored five runs in its final trip to the plate to defeat Manhattan 9-7 in the nightcap.
* In defeat, senior Victoria Alonso (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBI to pace the offense.
* Sophomore Marika Deemer (Perrysburg, OH / Perrysburg) added two hits, while graduate student Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NY / Middletown North) reached base safely three times with a pair of runs.
The teams will conclude their series at 11:00 am with another doubleheader at Niagara Falls High School.
