Fairfield, CT – The Manhattan Women's Lacrosse team earned its first road win of the season, defeating Sacred Heart 9-7 on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Carmella Liscio (Blauvelt, NY / Tappan Zee), senior Emily Sandford (Floral Park, NY / Sacred Heart) senior Deb Peifer (Collegeville, PA / Methacton) and sophomore Grace Lipponer (Lake Grove, NY / Sachem North) each chipped in two goals for Manhattan. Freshman Jessica Hise (Westminster, MD / Wesminster) made her collegiate debut, starting the second half in net and making five saves to earn the win.
The Pioneers opened the scoring just 50 minutes into the match. Manhattan responded with three straight tallies, including two from Sandford to lead 3-1. Sacred Heart scored the final two goals of the half as the teams went into the locker room tied at three.
The teams traded a pair of goals to make the score 5-5 before Manhattan scored four consecutive goals, capped off by sophomore Meghan Rodino's (Natick, MA / Natick) free position goal with under ten minutes to play to give Manhattan a comfortable 9-5 lead they would not relinquish.
Manhattan outshot Sacred Heart 27-19, committed less turnovers than the Pioneers (20-15) and won the ground ball battle (30-22).
