Riverdale, NY – Playing for the first time in over nine months against a Stony Brook team that won 28 games a year ago, Manhattan dropped a 65-52 decision in its season opener at Draddy Gymnasium.
After having their first four scheduled games canceled, the Jaspers showed some early rust against a Stony Brook squad (1-2) that was playing its third game of the year.
Preseason First Team All-MAAC selection Emily LaPointe (So., Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy) scored a game-high 16 points, while junior Dee Dee Davis (Bronx, NY / Truman) added 15 points with five rebounds and three steals in her first action in over a season.
Notes
* Davis scored the first points of the 2020-21 season with a layup at the 8:57 mark of the first quarter.
* Trailing 6-2 in the early going, Manhattan ripped off an 8-2 spurt in taking a two-point lead at the 4:27 mark of the opening stanza thanks to six points from LaPointe scoring six
* Stony Brook responded with 12-straight points, before Davis closed out the first quarter scoring with a corner triple.
* The Jaspers would continue to fight and trimmed the Seawolves' advantage to 26-23 with 3:50 remaining until halftime with a 10-4 spurt that was highlighted by back-to-back triples from Davis.

* Unfortunately, that would be as close as Manhattan would get as Stony Brook ended the half with nine-straight points in opening up a 35-23 advantage.
* Manhattan posted a 41-39 advantage on the glass, including 18-6 on the offensive end, and were led by Preseason All-MAAC First Team selection Courtney Warley's (Sr., West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan) game-high 12 to go along with eight points.

* Preseason All-MAAC Third Team selection Gabby Cajou (GS, Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) had a game-high seven assists and now has a 302 for her career in moving into 10th place in the all-time Jasper annals.

* Sophomore Jenna Jordan (Valley Cottage, NY / St. Francis Brooklyn), freshman Nia Bailey (New Rochelle, NY / New Rochelle) and freshman Emma Wilson-Saltos (Bronx, NY / Preston) all made their Jasper debuts.
* Manhattan made good on 10-of-12 (.833) from the line, while turning it over just 11 times and registering seven steals.
* Stony Brook now leads the all-time series by a 5-3 count.
* Anastasia Warren scored 14 points with six rebounds to pace Seawolves.
