Awonusi, Martinez & Scaglione Win Met Titles

Staten Island, NY - Manhattan track and field collected three individual titles on day two of the 2020 Metropolitan Indoor Championships, held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. 

Highlights:
  • Anu Awonusi (Dublin, Ireland / Kilkenny College) won the men's shot put, regaining the title after earning the Met indoor championship in 2018. Awonusi hit a season-best distance of 16.99 meters, the MAAC's top performance of the year. 
  • Enrique Martinez (San Salvador, El Salvador / Barton CC) won his first Metropolitan indoor title, hitting a distance of 18.10 meters in the men's weight throw and setting an indoor personal best. Teammate Nicholas Kocienda (Seaford, NY / Seaford) placed second in the event with a distance of 17.62 meters.
  • Andria Scaglione (Oceanside, NY / Oceanside) won the women's 3000-meter race, finishing with a time of 9:55:07, a collegiate PR and her first time completing the race in under 10 minutes. 
  • 2019 women's weight throw champion Nina Bjorkman (Vasteras, Sweden / Widenska Idrottsgymnasium) placed second in the event this year, hitting 16.44 meters.
  • Elijah Sleasman took second in the men's pole vault with a height of 4.05 meters.
  • Nicola Scaglione (Oceanside, NY / Oceanside) finished in the top-three in the women's mile competition, earning a time of 5:06.52.
  • The Jaspers also took home top-three performances in the two relays: the women's 4x800, with a time of 9:54.65, and the men's DMR with a time of 10:30.08. 
  • David Lozipone (Massapequa Park, NY / Kellenberg Memorial) finished fourth in the men's mile, running a PR of 4:16.24. He was closely followed by teammate Ryan Tierney (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's), who earned fifth place with a time of 4:16.38, also a PR.
  • Kaya Simpson earned a fourth-place showing in the men's 60-meter hurdles, hitting a personal best of 8.60 in the event finals. 
  • Cassie Riley (Fair Haven, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) tied for fourth in the women's high jump, setting her own personal best of 1.60 meters in the event. 
  • Alexandra Preckajlo (Ocean, NJ / St. Rose) earned a top-five finish in the women's shot put, throwing a distance of 13.87 meters, her collegiate PR. The distance now stands as the MAAC's best shot put performance of the season.
  • Liam Farrell (Hyde Park, NY / F.D. Roosevelt) placed in the top five in the men's 3000-meter race, setting his collegiate PR of 8:50.52.

The Jaspers will travel to the BU Valentine Invitational in Boston February 14-15.
