Jaspers Handle Big Green

Riverdale, NY - Sophomore guard Sydney Watkins (Wanaque, NJ / Saddle River Day) earned a career-high 20 points Sunday, December 1, helping Manhattan women's basketball to a 70-58 victory over Dartmouth at Draddy Gymnasium. 

Manhattan improves to 2-4 on the season, while the Big Green accept their first loss of the year, moving to 3-1. 

Highlights:
  • Watkins went 7-12 from the floor and 6-11 from three, besting her previous career-high of 14, which she earned at Saint Peter's last season. 
  • Three other Jaspers scored in double-figures Sunday afternoon, including Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan), who had 16, Lizahya Morgan (East Hartford, CT / Capital Preparatory Magnet) with 12 and Gabby Cajou (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland), who contributed 11. It was the first time this season that four players scored in double-digits, as Manhattan earned its highest team shooting percentage (47.9 percent) and highest point total (70) in a single-game so far this year. 
  • Warley paced the Jaspers on the boards, earning a team-high seven rebounds in the game. Manhattan held a 34-29 rebounding advantage over the Big Green in the contest, including 26-18 on the defensive glass. 
  • Cajou contributed a game-high (tied) five assists, while Lynette Taitt (Bronx, NY / Bishop Loughlin) and Emily LaPointe (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy) combined for six of Manhattan's eight steals. 
  • Manhattan shot 58.3 percent in the first quarter, breaking out to a seven-point lead after the first 10 minutes. Watkins had nine points in the stanza, hitting three treys in the opening minutes, while her teammates held Dartmouth to 27.8 percent shooting and just five rebounds. 
  • Manhattan opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run, sparked by five more points from Watkins. The Jaspers would lead by as many as 19 with 3:58 to go in the half. 
  • The Jaspers fell short in the third quarter, allowing Dartmouth to whittle the lead down to four. The Big Green shot more than 40 percent in the quarter, earning a 10-2 advantage in the paint, as well. On the other end, Manhattan committed four turnovers in the period and went just 4-13 from the field for the Jaspers' worst shooting performance of the day. 
  • Ahead by just four with 6:32 to play, the Jaspers were undeterred, going on a 14-3 tear to get the lead back to 15 with under two to go. Watkins contributed six points to the run as the Jaspers shot 63.6 percent from the field and 60 percent from three in the quarter.
  • Dartmouth is the second opponent the Jaspers have held under 60 points this season and the first to be held under 30 rebounds (29). 
  • Manhattan's 10 made three-pointers is the highest of the season so far. The Jaspers also totaled a season-best four blocks in the game, receiving three from Pamela Miceus (Haverstraw, NY / North Rockland), who ties her single-game career-high. 
  • Anna Luce had 16 points to lead Dartmouth, while Paula Lenart had a game-high nine rebounds. Luce and Lenart combined for 10 steals, each with five.
