Jaspers Lose Out In Home Opener

Riverdale, NY - Gabby Cajou (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) scored a team-high 16 points against Duquesne Sunday, November 10, but it wasn't enough to power the Jaspers past the Dukes in Manhattan's home opener, with Duquesne taking the win 76-65.

Manhattan falls to 0-2 on the season, while Duquesne picks up its first win, now at 1-2 on the year.

Highlights:
  • Cajou went 5-8 from the floor and 5-6 from the free throw line for the afternoon. She also contributed to the offense by doling out six assists.
  • Two other players scored in double-figures for Manhattan: Lizahya Morgan (East Hartford, CT / Capital Preparatory Magnet) and Emily LaPointe (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy). Morgan tied her career-high with 14 points, shooting 4-9 from three, while LaPointe put in 10, her new collegiate high.
  • Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan) led the Jaspers with seven boards, including five on the defensive end. She added a game-high four steals, as well as an assist and a block.
  • Trailing 34-19 in the second quarter, the Jaspers went on a 15-4 run to close out the half, behind by just four going into the locker room.
  • A difficult third quarter extended the Duquesne lead, however, as Manhattan could only muster six points in the stanza, while the Dukes shot 38.5 percent from the floor, earning 17 points.
  • The Jaspers turned it around in the fourth, shooting over 40 percent and outscoring the Dukes 25-21, but the Jaspers' fate was already sealed, as Duquesne cemented the 76-65 win.
  • The Dukes out-rebounded Manhattan 43-39, including 35-28 on the defensive boards. But the teams came out even in the paint, with Manhattan scoring 26 points in the key compared to Duquesne's 24. The Jaspers let up just seven second-chance points, and earned six of their own.
  • Libby Bazelak and Angela Staffileno combined for 42 points for Duquesne, with Bazelak adding a game-high nine rebounds.
  • Prior to the game, Manhattan Athletics retired the number of the school's all-time leading scorer (men's or women's), Sheila Tighe. Tighe's number 11 will now hang in Draddy next to Jack Power's 34 as the only two Jaspers to have their numbers retired.
