Albany, NY - UAlbany defeated Manhattan 3-2 in non-conference action at Varsity Field.
The Jaspers fall to 16-16 while the Great Danes improve to 11-15.
Manhattan posted its first major threat of the day in the top of the fifth when senior Paul Genners (Jacksonville, FL / Stanton College Prep) reached via an error with two outs before classmate Brendan Bisset (New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep (NJ)) and senior Adam Genners (Jacksonville, FL / Stanton College Prep) each drew free passes. Unfortunately, UAlbany would induce an inning-ending fly out to leave the bases loaded.
The Great Danes would finally break through in the bottom of the sixth inning when Patrick Lagravinese scored on Kenny Hayden's fielder's choice ground out.
Manhattan would strand two runners in the top of the seventh before rallying to take its first lead of the game with two runs in the eighth.
Junior Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) reached via an error to lead off the frame before moving to second on a wild pitch. Senior Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) followed with a RBI single through the right side to plate Pena while tying it up at 1-1. Classmate Brandon Valls (Miami, FL / Dean CC) followed with a single to move Pfenninger to second. Following a fly out, sophomore Alex Cerda (Miami, FL / Florida Christian Prep) belted his second hit of the game to score Pfenninger in staking the visitors to a 2-1 advantage.
Unfortunately, the lead would be short-lived as UAlbany plated a pair of runs in the bottom part of the frame in assuming a 3-2 advantage.
Adam Genners led off the ninth with a single and would move to second on Matt Padre's (Fr., Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) one-out single. Following a strikeout, Genners stole third but was unable to get any further.
Cerda went 2-for-3 with a RBI to pace an eight-hit Manhattan offense that saw eight players reach safely, including seven via a hit.
Junior RHP Matt Jones (Haddonfield, NJ / Haddonfield Memorial) continued his solid pitching, striking out three over 4.1 scoreless innings of two-hit ball.
Lagravinese was 2-for-3 with two runs to lead the way for UAlbany.
The Jaspers will open the home portion of their schedule against Fairfield on Saturday, April 14 with first pitch at Dutchess Stadium tabbed for 12:00 pm.
