DeLand, FL - A seven-game win streak came to an end Sunday, March 11, as Manhattan softball fell to both Holy Cross and UT Martin on the final day of the 2018 Stetson Invitational.
The Jaspers topped Holy Cross 13-2 in the first match-up of the teams on Saturday. But Manhattan was unable to overcome tough defense from the Crusaders, grabbing only six hits in the 4-1 loss.
Holy Cross broke open the scoring in the top of the second, taking advantage of three errors from the Jaspers. Starting pitcher
Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY / Tamarac) was able to earn two of her four total strike outs in the inning, but Manhattan got out of the second down 3-0.
The Crusaders added to their run total in the top of the next inning, when senior Savannah Young doubled to left field, scoring her teammate Taylor Wahler. The Jaspers responded in the bottom of the third, when freshman
Adriana Gambino (Stamford, CT / Westhill) singled to short, scoring
Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ / Middletown North). The score held for the remainder of the game, with Matazinsky (2-2) taking the loss from the mound.
Manhattan had the same offensive struggles in the second game, resulting in a 3-0 loss to UT Martin, the Jaspers' first shut out of the season so far. The Skyhawks earned two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second, followed by one more run in the bottom of the next inning. The Jaspers would get just one hit in the game, when freshman
Gabriella Fredette (Hackensack, NJ / Immaculate Conception) singled to the short stop in the top of the fifth. Pitcher
Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT / St. Joseph's) earned the loss for the Jaspers.
Manhattan went 3-2 for the weekend, improving to 7-5 on the season. Junior
Lauren Pitney (Ansonia, CT / St. Joseph's) and Gebhardt were named to the Stetson Invitational all-tournament team.
In five games, Pitney put together a slugging percentage of .727 and an on base percentage of .632. She had four hits, including a home run, and five runs. At second base, Pitney's fielding percentage for the five games was .957. Gebhardt went 6-16 during the tournament, with seven runs and two RBIs. Her slugging percentage was .688, with an on base percentage of .474 and a batting average of .375. Playing first base in each of the five games, she totaled 43 put outs with no errors.
