Jaspers Best Iona on the Road

Box Score

New Rochelle, NY - After two consecutive overtime losses this past week, and in their fifth game in 10 days, the Manhattan Jaspers bounced back to grab a 57-48 victory against Iona at the Hynes Athletic Center on Saturday, February 17. The win puts Manhattan at 11-16 for the season and 8-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Iona falls to 2-25 overall and 2-14 in the MAAC.

The Jaspers were led by senior guard Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY / James Madison) who scored a team-high 15 points, her 22nd double-figure scoring game of the season and the 11th time she has led Manhattan in scoring this year. She has averaged 19.5 points per game over the past four games. Against Iona, Tatum added four of the team's eight assists, and, in 37 minutes of play, committed no turnovers for the first time this season.

Coming off the bench, sophomore Gabby Cajou (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) put in 10 points, including going 6-8 from the foul line. The performance was her 12th double-figuring scoring game of the season. Senior Kayla Grimme (Altoona, PA / Altoona Area) pulled down 10 boards, the 10th time this season she has nabbed double-figure rebounds. She has recorded 12 or more rebounds for the Jaspers over the past four games, including a 20-rebound game against Siena on February 15.

Manhattan led for more than 35 minutes of the game, but Iona kept it tight, grabbing the lead twice in the first half of the second quarter. The Jasper relied on a series of runs to regain the high ground, including an 8-0 run sparked by four points from senior Mikki Guiton (Schwenksville, PA / Perkiomen) midway through the fourth that put Manhattan up 50-37.

The Jaspers out-rebounded the Gaels 37-27, the third time this year Manhattan has held an opponent to less than 30 rebounds. Iona was also held to just five offensive boards. Manhattan outscored the Gaels 30-18 in the paint, as well, and were able to nab 10 points off Iona's 12 turnovers.

Freshman Lynette Taitt (Irvington, NJ / Bishop Loughlin) recorded a career-high eight points and three steals, in addition to matching her career-high in rebounds at five.
