Edison, NJ – Wrapping up a historic season for Jasper men's soccer, three Manhattan student-athletes were selected to All-MAAC postseason teams, the conference announced this morning.
Junior defender
Adrien Awana (Bordeaux, France / University of Bordeaux) headlined the group with All-MAAC First Team honors, while sophomore forward
Berti Fourrier (Marseille, France / IFC Marseille) and junior goalkeeper
Marcellin Gohier (Nantes, France / CENS) were named to the All-MAAC Second Team.
"I am very proud and excited for these three student-athletes to be recognized for their outstanding seasons," proclaimed Head Coach Jorden Scott. "I am sure they will all testify to the fact that they couldn't have performed at that level without their teammates and it's another indication of the positive direction our program is moving in."
Awana was a critical component on Manhattan's back line while also adding a scoring touch in his first season in the Bronx. The junior scored four goals on the season while helping the Jaspers allow a program-low 12 goals in 2018. His premier moment in the Kelly Green and White came on September 18, when he headed in the game-winning goal in the 90th minute to down #25 Fordham at Gaelic Park. The victory was Manhattan's first over a ranked opponent in its 51-year history. He joined Quinnipiac's Jeppe Haehre and Defensive Player of the Year Jonas Vergin of Fairfield on the first-team defense. The Jaspers have had a student-athlete on the All-MAAC First Team for three of the last four seasons.
Fourrier also enjoyed a solid first year as a Jasper, posting four goals and a team-best five assists for 13 points, the latter statistic ranking him fifth in the conference. He also paced the squad with 55 shots on the season and tied Awana for tops on the team with three game-winning strikes, which helped Manhattan secure wins over Navy, Liberty and Canisius. Rider's Elliott Otmani and Saint Peter's' Dominic Laws accompanied Fourrier for the second team's forwards.
After securing the 2017 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year award, Gohier continued to post excellent numbers between the pipes. He compiled a MAAC-best seven shutouts while breaking the program record with career clean sheets. Gohier also ranked amongst the top three netminders in goals-against average (0.71 – second), save percentage (.810 – third) and wins (10 – second). The junior has helped set the program mark for fewest goals allowed in a season for two straight years.
In addition, the Jaspers placed five on the 2018 MAAC All-Academic team. Gohier as well as seniors
Ryan Shields (Wigan, England / Standish Community),
Jean-Baptiste Tamas-Leloup (Sainte Bazeille, France / Merignac), and
Eduardo Avalos (Arlington, TX / Hill College) represented Manhattan on a team with 83 student-athletes. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
The Jaspers ended their 2018 season with a 12-6 record, the most wins in program history. They have elevated their win total every season from 2016-2018.
