BUFFALO, NY – After notching its largest victory of the season on Monday, the Manhattan College women's basketball team looked to carry that momentum into Thursday's game at Canisius. The Jaspers (7-15, 3-10 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) were unable to overcome a slow start, however, as the Griffs (7-15, 6-7 MAAC) notched a 58-48 victory at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Canisius scored the first nine points of the game before the Jaspers responded with an 8-0 run of their own. The Griffs led 11-8 after the first quarter, but Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY) rattled off five straight points to start the second period to put Manhattan in front, 13-11. After a Lauren D'Hont layup tied it, Mikki Guiton (Schwenksville, PA) sank a pair of buckets to give the Jaspers a 17-13 edge with 7:02 left in the first half. Canisius ended the half on an 11-0 spurt, though, and took a 26-19 advantage into the locker room.
A Tatum jumper started the scoring in the third quarter, but a three-pointer and a layup on the next two Canisius possessions extended the Griffs' advantage to 10 points, 31-21. The margin reached a game-high 15 points at 40-25 with 39 seconds remaining in the period, and the Griffs entered the fourth quarter with a 40-27 cushion.
The Griffs pused the margin back to 15 at 47-32 midway through the fourth quarter before a pair of Kayla Grimme (Altoona, PA) layups started a 9-2 Manhattan rally that brought the Jaspers within eight, 49-41, with 3:42 left. However, despite tallying just one field goal in the quarter, Canisius went 15-for-20 at the free throw line in the final period to put away the 58-48 triumph.
Tatum led Manhattan with 17 points to go along with five assists and three steals. Grimme and Guiton, meanwhile, both registered a doule-double. Grimme finished with 14 points, 10 boards and three blocks, while Guiton went 6-for-6 from the field for 12 points. She added a career-high 11 rebounds. Gabby Cajou (Stony Point, NY) distributed five assists for the Jaspers, who shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field. Manhattan went just 3-for-23 (13 percent) from long range and was 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) at the free throw line.
Sara Hinriksdottir tallied a game-high 20 points to pace the Griffs. She also pulled down seven rebounds, as Canisius outrebounded Manhattan 42-36. D'Hont finished with 15 points, seven boards and three assists, while Tamara Miskovic handed out five assists. The Griffs shot 29.1 percent (16-of-55) from the floor, 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from downtown, and 72 percent (18-of-25) at the charity stripe.
On Saturday, the Jaspers conclude their Western New York swing with a 3 p.m. matchup at Niagara (5-17, 2-11 MAAC). The Purple Eagles earned a 62-59 victory when the squads met at Draddy Gymnasium on Jan. 15.
