Day 1 Recap

NEW YORK – On Sunday evening, the Manhattan College men's and women's track & field teams concluded the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Indoor Championships at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center.  The women's squad secured third place in the team standings, while the Manhattan men finished fourth as a team.

A day after setting a meet record of 7.57 seconds in the preliminary round of the women's 60 meters, Paige Chapman (Abingdon, MD) equaled that mark in the final, as she earned her first MAAC title in the event.  Chapman then secured second place in the 200 meters with a 25.00-second clocking.

Kelly Gorman (South Amboy, NJ) finished second in the 800 meters, qualifying for the ECAC Championships with a time of 2:13.37.  She then ran a leg on Manhattan's 4x400 meter relay squad that took second in 3:55.69.  Joining Gorman in the 4x400 relay were Mikeisha Kelly (Albany, NY), Jasmine Davis (Ronkonkoma, NY) and Kathy Cadet (Endicott, NY).  Kelly and Davis both ran in the final of the individual 400 meters, as well, with Kelly (57.93) finishing third and Davis (58.12) grabbing sixth place.  Erin Spadaccini (Wilmington, DE), meanwhile, placed eighth in the mile with a 5:07.18 clocking.

Kathleen Cibuls (Blue Point, NY) and Ellinor Persson (Taby, Sweden) each contributed points in both the 60 meter hurdles and triple jump.  Cibuls was sixth in the 60 hurdles (8.94) and fifth in the triple jump (11.19 m, 36'8½), while Persson took third in the triple jump (11.38 m, 37'4) and eighth in the 60 hurdles (9.19).  Three Jaspers scored in the triple jump, as Charlene Pohl (Bisingen, Germany) was eighth with a leap of 10.79 m (35'5).

Manhattan, which tied for third place in 2016, comfortably held that position this year with 92.5 team points.  Monmouth secured its fourth consecutive MAAC indoor title with 208.5 points, while Rider was second with 137 points.

In the men's shot put, Ryan Addlesberger (Cinnaminson, NJ) led a 1-4-8 finish with a mark of 17.21 m (56'5¾).  Ire Bozovicar (Potoki, Slovenia) was fourth (16.56 m, 54'4), and Eric Waugh (Wheatley Heights, NY) placed eighth (15.16 m, 49'9).

Stefan Hoeller (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) added team points in three different events.  He placed third in the pole vault (4.65 m, 15'3) while also finishing fourth in the 60 hurdles (8.40) and anchoring the Jaspers' 4x400 relay to a fourth-place showing.  He was joined in the 4x400 relay by Akash Patel (Orlando, FL), John Dove (Monroe, NY), who also took sixth in the mile with a time of 4:16.85, and JP Merkler (Spring Lake, NJ).  Dennis Eriksson (Sundsvall, Sweden), meanwhile, captured fifth place in the 60 hurdles (8.41) and fourth in the triple jump.  His IC4A-qualiyfing distance of 14.64 m (48'0½) was identical to that of teammate Hayden Clarke (Townsville, Australia), but Clarke was awarded third place because of a better second mark.

Anthony Hall (Mountainville, NY) led the Jaspers' efforts on the track.  He grabbed second place in the 60 (6.95) and third in the 200 (22.58).  Amir Khaghani (Bethesda, MD) took sixth in the 3000 meters (8:34.49) and Liam O'Brien (Clifton Park, NY) placed eighth in the 800 (1:59.15).  In addition, Chris Sandoli (Old Bridge, NJ) finished seventh in the pole vault (4.20 m, 13'9¼).

It was an extremely tight men's competition, with the Jaspers collecting 113.5 team points, just 2.5 fewer than third-place Iona.  Meanwhile, Rider edged three-time defending champion Monmouth 149-146 for its first-ever MAAC indoor title.

After taking next week off, those Jaspers that have qualified will return to action at the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships in Boston from March 3-5.
