RIVERDALE, NY – For the first time in history, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships will be a two-day meet this season. The Manhattan College men's and women's teams will head to the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Saturday and Sunday looking to regain the conference title. The Jasper men finished second last year, while the women's squad ended up tied for third.
After three consecutive second-place finishes, Manhattan is looking for its first men's championship since 2013. The Jaspers were picked second behind Monmouth in the MAAC Preseason Poll.
Love Litzell (Ostersund, Sweden), who missed last year's MAAC meet due to injury, is the top seed in the weight throw, while Ryan Addlesberger (Cinnaminson, NJ), a two-time MAAC Field Performer of the Week, has the best mark in the conference in the shot put. The Jaspers also boast Hayden Clarke (Townsville, Australia), this season's top performer in the long jump.
Manhattan will look for points in the sprints from Anthony Hall (Mountainville, NY), while miler John Dove (Monroe, NY) leads a strong distance squad that finished fourth at the MAAC Cross Country Championships. In addition, Stefan Hoeller (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) and Dennis Eriksson (Sundsvall, Sweden) will both compete in multiple events, and are capable of scoring in each.
On the women's side, the Jaspers were tabbed to finish third in the MAAC Preseason Poll. Manhattan finished tied with Rider for third place last year and looks to bring home the women's championship trophy for the first time since 2010.
Marisa Robbins (Goshen, NY) is the two-time reigning MAAC Indoor Championships Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events. She broke the championship record in the pole vault last year and is favored to win that event for the third consecutive time. The Jaspers also have a strong 1-2 combination of Charlene Pohl (Bisingen, Germany) and Ellinor Persson (Taby, Sweden) in the long and triple jumps. Kathleen Cibuls (Blue Point, NY), meanwhile, won the pentathlon at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships and is entered in four different events at the MAAC Championships. She's also a possibility for the meet-ending 4x400 meter relay.
In the sprints, Paige Chapman (Abingdon, MD) leads the way. She enters the conference meet with the top time in the MAAC in both the 60 and 200 meters. The Jaspers are also strong in the distance races, with Kelly Gorman (South Amboy, NJ) and Alexa Roda (Staten Island, NY) both among the favorites in the 800 meters and Lisa Fajardo (Brooklyn, NY) boasting the No. 2 seed in the 5000 meters after her great run at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston.
The men's competition figures to be a tight three-way battle between Monmouth, Manhattan and Rider for the team title. Three-time defending champion Monmouth is the favorite on the women's side, with Manhattan, Rider and Quinnipiac also in the mix. Points are awarded to the top eight finishers in each event on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale.
Action on Saturday gets underway at 5:30 p.m. and features mostly preliminary heats, as well as a few finals in distance races and field events. The remaining finals take place on Sunday starting at 4:30 p.m. The entire meet will be webcast live on MAAC.tv.
