Bronx, NY - Fordham (2-3) defeated Manhattan (2-4) 70-57 in the annual "Battle of the Bronx" at Rose Hill Gymnasium.
Despite the loss, senior
Calvin Crawford (Middletown, NY / St. Thomas More (CT)) notched his second double-double of the year (11 points, 10 rebounds) and classmate
Rich Williams (Brooklyn, NY / Vermont Academy (VT)) paced the Jaspers with 12 points.
In the second half, the Rams opened a 19-point lead with 9:15 to play and appeared to be on cruise control when Manhattan ripped off 11-straight points. Sophomore Pauly Paulicap (Elmont, NY / Harcum College) capped the spurt with a three-point play that was punctuated by rim-rattling dunk in bringing the visitors to within eight at 58-50 with 6:03 to play.
Fordham would answer on the ensuing possession before Crawford again made it an eight-point game with just over five to play. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Jaspers would get as the Rams responded with 10-straight points in extending its advantage to 70-52 with less than two minutes to play.
Senior
Zane Waterman (Winston-Salem, NC / Fayetteville Academy) had 11 points and seven rebounds and junior
Thomas Capuano (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY / Iona Prep) also added 11 in giving Manhattan four double-figure scorers for the first this season.
