Berkeley, CA - The Manhattan College women's basketball team grabbed its second win of the season Saturday, beating Coppin State 74-56 in day two of the Cal Classic at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, CA. In their largest margin of victory this year, Manhattan saw 10 players score and five pull down three or more rebounds.
Senior center
Kayla Grimme (Altoona, PA / Altoona Area) led the Jaspers in scoring with 17 points. She also totaled 11 rebounds, averaging a double-double for the tournament, earning all-tournament team honors. Senior guard
Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY / James Madison) continued her solid play on all ends of the floor, with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
Though leading by only two at the end of the first quarter, the Jaspers took advantage of the Eagles' 16.7 percent field-goal shooting in the second. Manhattan went 53.3 percent from the floor during that period, as well as 50 percent from three-point range, including two threes by Tatum that helped put the Jaspers up 26-14 at the half.
After outscoring #21 Cal on fastbreak points Friday, Manhattan continued to use quick play to its advantage against Coppin State, besting the Eagles 15-4 in transition. The Jaspers were also able to tally 18 more points in the paint, double the total for Coppin State. Manhattan went up by as many as 24 in the third quarter, the team's largest lead of the game.
Eight Jaspers came off the bench for Manhattan, with five subs contributing to the offense. Sophomore guard
Gabby Cajou (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) added 10 points, while sophomore center
Alex Smith (Bronx, NY / Middle Tennessee State) put in nine, helping Manhattan's bench outscore Coppin State's 29-6. Cajou also led the Jaspers in assists, with six.
