NEW YORK – It was a late night for the Manhattan College men's and women's indoor track & field teams on Saturday, as the Towson Tiger Invitational extended into the early hours of Sunday morning. The late-night competition didn't seem to have much of an effect on the Jaspers, though, as Manhattan athletes won two events and placed second in five others at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center.
Love Litzell (Ostersund, Sweden) easily won the men's weight throw with a toss of 20.20 meters (66 feet, 3¼ inches). That effort places him 16th on this season's NCAA performance list, which currently puts him in a qualifying position for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Ellinor Persson (Taby, Sweden), meanwhile, took first in the women's long jump in her first meet back from an injury. On her first attempt of the competition, she got out to a distance of 5.75 m (18'10½), which qualified her for the ECAC Indoor Championships. Charlene Pohl (Bisingen, Germany) finished second in the competition with a 5.62 m (18'5¼) effort. In the women's pole vault, Marisa Robbins (Goshen, NY) secured third place with a leap of 3.65 m (11'11¾).
On the track, the women's squad earned a pair of second-place finishes. Kelly Gorman (South Amboy, NJ) posted a time of 2:15.91 in the 800 meters, while Erin Spadaccini (Wilmington, DE) grabbed second in the 1000 meters with a 2:58.77 clocking. Paige Chapman (Abingdon, MD) registered her best time of the season in the 60 meters. She ended up third overall in 7.62 seconds. Mikeisha Kelly (Albany, NY) recorded a third-place finish of her own in the 500 meters (1:17.13).
Litzell's nationally-ranked performance was one of several outstanding efforts by the Jasper men. Ryan Addlesberger (Cinnaminson, NJ) took second in the shot put with a mark of 16.87 m (55'4¼). Stefan Hoeller (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) (4.40 m, 14'5¼) and Luke Ammirati (Staten Island, NY) (4.25 m, 13'11¼) went 2-3 in the pole vault, while Hayden Clarke (Townsville, Australia) placed third in the long jump (7.18 m, 23'6¾). After securing seventh place in the 60 meter hurdles (8.53), Dennis Eriksson (Sundsvall, Sweden) added a fifth-place showing in the triple jump (14.05 m, 46'1¼).
In one of the closest races of the night, John Dove (Monroe, NY) was nipped at the line in the men's 1000. His time of 2:30.97 place him just 0.7 seconds behind the winner, Coppin State's Alaric Coker.
The meet was team scored, and the Manhattan men finished second out of 17 schools with 75 points. The women's squad earned 56 points to place fifth out of 17 teams. The Jaspers ended up just two points behind Morgan State and one ahead of Temple in a very close women's competition.
Next weekend, Manhattan returns to the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island for the Penn 8 Team Select. Competition is scheduled to get underway at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
