SAN JOSE, CA – On Saturday afternoon, the Manhattan College volleyball team (0-2) suffered a 25-19, 25-18, 25-17 loss to Providence (1-1) at San Jose State's Spartan Gym in its second match of the Spartan Invitational.
Manhattan scored the first three points of the match, but Providence quickly responded with an 8-0 run to take an 8-3 advantage. With the Friars holding a 13-9 lead, Milena Janjusevic (Belgrade, Serbia) slammed a kill to start a 4-0 spurt that brought the Jaspers even at 13-13. However, Providence countered with a 9-3 rally to go up 22-16, and the Friars took the opening set by a 25-19 margin.

In the second set, the Jaspers again jumped out to an early lead, pulling in front 6-3 on a service ace by Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii). After five straight Providence points gave the Friars an 8-6 cushion, an Ivana Kostic (Grocka, Serbia) kill and an Alyssa Rehrer (Lorton, VA) ace evened the score at 8-8. With it tied at 10-10, Providence used a 7-2 run to open up a 17-12 advantage. The Jaspers captured the next three points to get back within two, 17-15, but the Friars immediately responded with a 5-0 run to push the margin to seven points, 22-15. Providence hit .357 (15 kills, five errors, 28 attempts) in the set and took a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-18 win.
Providence took the first two points of the third set, but Manhattan claimed the next four to take a 4-2 lead. The Friars responded with a 5-0 run to go up 7-4, and that margin eventually reached nine points at 18-9. After Providence reached match point at 24-13, the Jaspers rattled off four straight points before the Friars closed out a 25-17 set win and 3-0 match victory.
Kostic paced the Jaspers with eight kills, and she added two blocks. Mary Donnelly (Temecula, CA) and Janjusevic contributed six kills apiece, while Yamashiro tallied eight digs. Taylor Hasley (Memphis, TN) also collected eight digs to go along with 15 assists. As a team, the Jaspers hit .095 (28-19-95) in the match.
For Providence, Megan Onyudo led the way with 12 kills on .522 hitting. She completed a double-double with a match-high 11 digs. Michelle Cruz added 10 digs, as the Friars outdug the Jaspers 39-31. Chicyia Clark, meanwhile, handed out 29 assists to go along with six digs and three aces. Abigail Dix finished with six blocks and Cayla Veverka tallied four blocks, as Providence held an 8-2 blocking advantage. The Friars hit .304 (40-12-92) as a team.
The Jaspers conclude the tournament later on Saturday with a matchup against host San Jose State (2-0) at 10 p.m. ET. A free webcast of the match will be available thru the Mountain West Network.
