Riverdale, NY - Kaila Lozada's goal in the 28th minute of the first half proved to be the game-winner as Hartford edged Manhattan 1-0 in the season opener for both teams at Gaelic Park.
"Hartford is a good team that defended well and did a good job of advancing the ball against us," said head coach Brendan Lawler. "We need to match that going forward and use our speed more."
The Hawks owned a 5-3 advantage on shots on goal as well as taking four corner kicks to just two for the Jaspers.
Freshman Olivia Printy (Point Verde, FL / St. Joseph Academy) had a stellar collegiate debut between the pipes, making four saves and was aided by an outstanding back line.
Senior Erica Modena (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) had a chance to draw Manhattan even in the 44th minute but her shot was stopped by the Hartford's Jessica Jurg.
After halftime, sophomore Nicole Copping (Bayport, NY / Bayport-Blue Point) narrowly missed the back of the net on a header. Jurg then made a nice stop on senior Lizzy Carlson's (Auburn, MA / Auburn) shot to the lower left corner of the net in the 80th minute in what would prove to be the Jaspers' final scoring opportunity.
Manhattan concludes its season-opening two-match homestand against LIU Brooklyn on Monday, August 22 at 7:00 pm.
