Playoff Periscope
The simplest way for the Jaspers to make the playoffs is to win all three games. Manhattan holds the tiebreaker with Niagara, which has an identical 11-10 record, and would need to only match the Purple Eagles assuming that Quinnipiac doesn't catch the two. The Bobcats are two games back but have the tiebreaker over the Jaspers.
First Time In A Long Time
The Jaspers' three wins over Saint Peter's was its first series sweep since turning the trick against the Peacocks in 2014.
Three In A Row, Go For One More
Manhattan has won each of its last three MAAC weekends going 7-2 during that time and with a fourth-straight series victory would sit in excellent shape for a tournament berth.
Weekend Of Firsts For Carrera
Junior Jose Carrera had a monster weekend against Saint Peter's batting .600 (9-of-15) with six runs, five RBI, a double, home run, three stolen bases and two walks en route to registering some impressive firsts:
* First MAAC Player of the Week accolade
* First five-hit performance (Game 1)
* First game-winning walk (Game 2)
* First career home run (Game 3)
On The Year ...
Carrera is hitting .294, including .333 during MAAC play, with a team-high 41 runs (3rd MAAC), 18 stolen bases, 17 doubles, three triples, on home run and 17 RBI.
Game One
All nine starters hit safely as the Jaspers rapped out 21 hits en route to posting a 16-8 series-opening victory at Saint Peter's.
Santi Comes Up Big
Santisteban's 210th career hit was arguably his biggest in a Manhattan uniform. His fifth home run of the year in the top of the seventh of game two at Saint Peter's tied the score at 2-2 with the visitors eventually winning in eight innings.
What's Overlooked ...
With two outs in the sixth inning, junior Jason Patnick legged out an infield hit before freshman Anthony Rocchietti clubbed a double to left field. Though the Jaspers didn't score, those hits rolled the line-up over for Carrera to get on board and Santisteban to deliver the aforementioned equalizer.
Breaking Out The Brooms
In Manhattan's series-ending 7-2 win, Santisteban and freshman Fabian Pena both failed to record a hit marking just the second time during MAAC play that both players went hitless in a game.
Pfenninger Doing ... OK
Lost amidst last weekend's power surge was the play of junior Michael Pfenninger as the Garden State native hit .462 (6-of-13) with four runs, a double, triple, six RBI and six stolen bases. He has hit safely in nine-straight and 15-of-16, batting a team-best .394 with eight multi-hit games, 26 hits, eight doubles, 16 RBI and eight stolen bases while raising his average 71 points to its current mark of .290.
Cosgrove
Sophomore LHP Tom Cosgrove won for the second-straight start in game one at Saint Peter's and has a 1.98 ERA with 24 strikeouts, against eight walks, over 27.1 innings while limiting hitters to a .240 average over his last four starts. On the year, he is 3-5 with a 3.58 ERA and 69 strikeouts (5th MAAC) over 78.0 innings.
Jacques Comes Through
Junior LHP Joe Jacques struck out nine while scattering just two unearned runs on two hits over 7.0 stellar innings in the series-closing win over Saint Peter's. Over his last five games, he is 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 21.1 innings of work while limiting opposing hitters to a .162 average.
The Kandy Man
Junior RHP Shawn Kanwisher collected his team-leading seventh victory against the Peacocks while capping Saturday's doubleheader sweep. Over his last five games, he has a 0.00 ERA with 14 strikeouts over 15.1 scoreless innings of work while limiting opposing hitters to a .104 average.
Santy Stat Updates
Santisteban is 12th in the all-time Jasper annals with 210 hits and second with 60 doubles. On the year, he is hitting a team-best .369 (2nd MAAC) with 66 hits (2nd MAAC), 39 runs (5th MAAC), 18 doubles (2nd MAAC), five home runs, 38 RBI (3rd MAAC), 27 walks (8th MAAC), a team-best .453 OBP (3rd MAAC) and a .553 slugging percentage (3rd MAAC).
Doubles Machine
Freshman Fabian Pena clubbed a pair of doubles in the series-opening win over Saint Peter's and now has 21 for the year, ranking second in school history. He has now hit safely in 28 of his last 33 games and ranks among the league leaders in batting .(350-5th), hits (64-4th), doubles (21-1st), home runs (7-4th), RBI (45-1st) and slugging (.601-1st) to go along with a team-best 13 multi-RBI games and 18 multi-hit games.
Reynolds Earns Academic Accolades
Pena's fellow catcher, Reynolds was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District ® College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) All-District First Team and is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
Stat Of The Week
Manhattan's trio of Pena (21), Santisteban (18) and Carrera (17) rank1-2-3 in the MAAC in doubles with their total of 56 ranking ahead of 10 teams in the Division I ranks.
Last Time Against Iona
Iona took two-of-three in the teams' last match-up despite the fact that Santisteban hit .333 (3-for-9).
Duffy Against Iona
Head Coach Jim Duffy owns an 8-4 record against the Gaels, but is just 2-4 over the last two seasons.
