Brooklyn, NY - Senior Chris Reynolds' (Wall, NJ / St. Rose) bases loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted Manhattan to a thrilling 7-6 walk-off victory over NYIT in non-conference action at MCU Park.
With their third walk-off win of the year, the Jaspers improve to 11-22 while the Bears fall to 14-18.
NYIT opened the scoring on Matt DeAngelis' sacrifice fly in the first before adding three runs in the third in taking an early 4-0 lead and appeared to be in complete control.
Manhattan sliced the deficit in half in the bottom part of the frame with a pair of runs. Junior Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) led off with a four-pitch walk before moving to third on freshman Richie Barrella's (Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep) double to center field. Senior Christian Santisteban (Miami, FL / Gulliver Prep) then opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Carrera. Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) followed with a single to left field while moving Barrella to third. Sophomore Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Barrella in trimming the deficit to 4-2.
The Bears immediately responded with a pair of runs in taking a 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth.
In the sixth, the Jaspers rallied with four runs in tying the game at 6-6 while batting around. Sophomore Ryan Gronlier (Doral, FL / Doral Academy) drew a bases loaded walk before Reynolds delivered an infield single to make it a 6-4 game. Later in the frame, Barrella drew another bases loaded walk and Gronlier scampered home on a wild pitch to tie the game at 6-6.
After plating six runs in the first four frames, NYIT managed just two hits the rest of the way and had both runners erased on the bases. During that time, senior RHP Michael Scarinci (Nanuet, NY / Pearl River) struck out five over 3.0 perfect frames before junior RHP Shawn Kanwisher (Washington Township, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) also fanned five in 3.0 innings.
In the top of the ninth, Frank Sancacore crushed a one-out triple to left center but was gunned down at the plate when Carrera fired a strike to the plate.
The Bears would be denied one inning later when Anthony Caradonna blasted a double to right center with one out before Carrera picked up another assist, this time at third base as Caradonna's triple try was denied.
In the bottom part of the frame, Pfenninger led off with a single before making it to second on a fielder's choice grounder when he beat the throw. After NYIT got the lead runner at third on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, Gronlier drew his second walk of the day to load up the bases. Reynolds then laced the second pitch he saw back up the middle to give Manhattan its second extra-inning win of the year over the visitors.
Pfenninger went 3-for-3 with a run, RBI and walk while Reynolds was 2-for-5 with two RBI to lead the way for the Jaspers with Kanwisher improving to 4-3 with the victory.
Joe Duru was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs while Louis Mele had two triples to pace the Bears.
Manhattan returns to action with a 12:00 pm doubleheader at Quinnipiac on Saturday, April 23.
