EAST MEADOW, NY – The Manhattan College men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded the ECAC Winter Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Sunday afternoon. The men's squad finished third overall, equaling its best-ever finish at a championship meet. Manhattan took 10th in the team standings on the women's side.
“We put together a great effort over the last three days to set us up nicely for the rest of the year,” Head Coach Joe Murtha said. “I think everyone saw their hard work over the last few months pay off while also giving us some things to work on moving forward.”
Timothy Valentine (Massapequa, NY), who became Manhattan's first-ever ECAC individual champion when he won the 100 yard breaststroke on Saturday, added a second-place showing in the 200 yard individual medley on Sunday. He posted a time of 1:58.81, while Tyler McCloskey (Orangeburg, NY) placed seventh in 2:02.24.
Valentine also helped the Jaspers notch a pair of top-five relay finishes. Manhattan took second in the 400 yard medley relay (3:31.55) and fifth in the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:14.44). Neil Perry (Elkridge, NY), who swam the anchor leg in both relays, also placed third individually in the 50 yard freestyle (21.60). In the 500 yard freestyle, Evan Battisti (East Meadow, NY) finished sixth in 4:47.84.
With 926 points, Manhattan secured third place in the team standings for the second consecutive year. NJIT won the team title with 1323 points. The Jasper women, meanwhile, earned 459 points. Wagner's winning total was 1096 points.
On the women's side, Kali Nembach (Lynbrook, NY) set her second school record in as many days. Her time of 24.89 seconds in the 50 freestyle was good for 10th place. Alexandra Hutzler (Miller Place, NY), who broke two school records on Saturday, completed the meet with a fifth-place showing in the 200 individual medley (2:12.14).
That duo also took part in both relays. Manhattan finished seventh in the 400 medley relay, which also included Megan Pagano (Lagrangeville, NY) and Klaudia Nagrabska (Belmont, MA), with a time of 4:08.33. Kathryn Voitik (Moscow, PA) and Cassandra Rubino (Thiells, NY) were also on the 400 freestyle relay squad that placed 11th in 3:44.77.
Manhattan resumes dual meet competition with a visit to local rival Fordham for the “Battle of the Bronx” at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
