RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Central Connecticut jumped out to an early two-goal lead en route to posting a 3-1 victory over Manhattan in Wednesday night non-conference action at Gaelic Park.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 2-3 while the Jaspers fall to 0-4.
Central Connecticut opened the scoring with an own goal in the 15th minute as Dominic Plant delivered a corner kick that was inadvertently redirected in off Manhattan. The Blue Devils added to the lead in the 39th minute when Louis Beddouri blasted the ball in following a beautiful feed from Ryan Taylor along the right side.
Just over two minutes later, junior Niels Kirch (Zülpich, Germany / Virginia Tech) put the Jaspers on the board when he slotted an Ajani Phillips (South River, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep.) through ball under the Blue Devil keeper in the 41st minute to slice the lead in half at 2-1. The goal also swung the momentum in Manhattan's favor as the home team would become the attacker for the rest of the half. Junior Tarek Beckles (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Monroe College) and Kirch followed with point-blank shots only to be denied.
After halftime, sophomore Troy Carrington (Verona, N.J. / Syracuse) saw his effort to equalize soar wide left before CCSU notched its third goal of the game when Ben Knight scored off a Viktor Damgaard shot.
Manhattan completes non-conference play at NJIT on Sunday, Sept. 20. The opening kick is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
