WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – On Sunday afternoon, the Manhattan College men's and women's track & field teams concluded competition at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Championships. Sitting in second place after the Saturday's events at Monmouth University, the men's squad ended up second overall behind the host Hawks. The Jasper women, meanwhile, finished fourth as a team. Monmouth also claimed the women's team title.
The Manhattan men picked up two more gold medals on Sunday to go with Love Litzell's (Ostersund, Sweden) win in the hammer throw on Saturday. Bobby Gebhard (Saddle River, N.J.), who was second in the long jump on Saturday, added a MAAC triple jump title on Sunday. He got out to a distance of 14.58 meters (47 feet, 10 inches). Dennis Eriksson (Sundsvall, Sweden) was second in the event with a leap of 14.32 m (46'11¾). Clement Gicquel (Rennes, France), meanwhile, took first in the high jump (2.09 m, 6'10¼) and fourth in the javelin (59.91 m, 196'7).
With a mark of 65.73 m (215'8), Phil Ragan (Belmar, N.J.) broke his own school record in the javelin, which was good enough for second place. Blerim Pocesta (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned his second silver medal of the meet in the discus (49.96 m, 163'11), and Ire Bozovicar (Potoki, Slovenia) took fourth in the event with a toss of 47.54 m (156'0). Stefan Hoeller (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) captured the bronze medal in the 400 meter hurdles (54.54) and added a fourth-place showing in the pole vault (4.25 m, 13'11¼).
Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) broke the meet record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.00, but had to settle for second place behind Monmouth's Dylan Capwell. Individually, Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) finished third in the 400 meters (48.59). He was also a part of two silver medal-winning relay teams. In the 4x100 meter relay, Derenoncourt, Anthony Hall (Mountainville, N.Y.), Will Stallings (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) and Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) recorded a time of 42.11 seconds. Derenoncourt, Perrier, Stallings and Joe Martello (Amawalk, N.Y.) then wrapped up second place in the team standings by grabbing second in the final event, the 4x400 meter relay (3:14.33).
Monmouth defended its MAAC title with 266 points. The Jaspers finished comfortably in second with 181 team points, more than 50 points clear of third-place Rider.
For the women's team, Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) earned her second gold medal of the meet in the 100 meter hurdles. The No. 1 seed after Saturday's heats, her time in the final was 13.93 seconds. Including Horschig's two titles, four Manhattan women were crowned MAAC champions this weekend.
Meanwhile, Katharina Klien (Mader, Austria) took second in the javelin (41.93 m, 137'7) and fifth in the discus (39.02 m, 128'0). Lina Bengtson (Malmo, Sweden) was second in the discus with a mark of 47.69 m (156'5). Charlene Pohl (Bisingen, Germany) finished fourth in the javelin (37.59 m, 123'4) and tied for seventh in the high jump (1.55 m, 5'1), while Kathy Cadet (Endicott, N.Y.) grabbed fourth place in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.31).
Manhattan earned a total of 103.6 team points on the women's side. Monmouth won its second consecutive conference championship with 260.2 points, while Quinnipiac was second with 127 points, five ahead of third-place Rider.
In addition, 10 men and eight women were selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Eriksson, Hoeller, Litzell, Myrtil, Nick Adamo (Franklin Square, N.Y.), Killian Barry (Dublin, Ireland), Hayden Clarke (Townsville, Australia), Kevin O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.), Savio Paul (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Neil Pinnock (Yonkers, N.Y.) were recognized on the men's side. For the women's team, Bengtson, Horschig, Klien, Breanna Brucher (Glen Spey, N.Y.), Alina Koenigs (Moenchengladbach, Germany), Nicole Mainente (Shirley, N.Y.), Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) and Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland) were honored for their work in the classroom.
