CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Courtesy of a very strong offensive effort, the number two ranked team in the nation, UNC, defeated the Manhattan men's lacrosse team, 26-6, at Navy Field.
With the loss, the Jaspers drop to 0-6 on the season. The Tar Heels improved to 6-0.
UNC entered the game as the fourth highest scoring offense in the nation and added to that total. The Tar Heels' 26 goals mark a new season high.
UNC struck first when sophomore Luke Goldstock recorded his first of five goals on the afternoon just 29 seconds into the game. Goldstock finished the day with a game-high nine points (5G, 4A). Just over two minutes later, the Jaspers knotted the score at one, when sophomore Nick Stutler (Ft. Wright, Ky. / Covington Catholic) notched his second goal of the season.
The Tar Heels followed with a 5-0 run over the remainder of the first quarter before Manhattan senior captain Marcel Godino (Summit, N.J. / Summit) tallied his first of a team-high three goals on the game with 12:57 to play in the first half.
Following a Tar Heels' 3-0 run, sophomore Matt Garvey (Essex Fells, N.J. / West Essex) scored for the Jaspers to make it a 9-3 game.
UNC closed the opening half hour of play on a 4-0 run to take a commanding 13-3 lead at halftime.
Godino scored twice in the third quarter and finished the game with a team-high four points. Junior Stephen Farrell (Loudonville, N.Y. / Shaker) also scored for Manhattan in the second half.
Godino and Stutler each registered one assist in the affair, while freshman Andrew Gresham (Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada / Pitt Meadows Secondary) picked up two assists.
Defensively, freshman Frank Merrill (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) led Manhattan with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
The Jaspers will next play on Saturday, March 14, when they host Canisius for both their home and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
