UTSA Team Challenge Results
MIAMI, Fla. – With a split squad competing at both the Hurricane Invitational in Miami and the UTSA Team Challenge in San Antonio, the Manhattan College track & field team's outdoor season got off to a successful start on Saturday. Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Kelly Gorman (South Amboy, N.J.) recorded victories in the 800 meters at the Hurricane Invitational, while Charlene Pohl (Bisingen, Germany) finished off a first-place performance in the heptathlon at the UTSA Team Challenge.
The Jaspers sent a squad of mostly distance runners to Miami. Perrier ran a personal-best time of 1:50.09 to take first place in a field of 22 (that included Olympic medalist Bershawn Jackson) in the men's 800. Meanwhile, in the women's 800, Gorman posted a winning time of 2:15.69.
Manhattan also got a strong performance from Kathy Cadet (Endicott, N.Y.) in the women's 400 meter hurdles. She registered a 1:04.55 clocking, which was good for third place. In addition to finishing 10th in the 100 meter hurdles (14.26), Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) grabbed fifth in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.37 meters (17 feet, 7½ inches). Marisa Robbins (Goshen, N.Y.) placed second in the women's pole vault (3.30 m, 10'10), while Maddie Arndt (Merrimack, Mass.) and Maddesen Weekes (Clifton Park, N.Y.) both cleared 3.15 m (10'4) to end up in a tie for third.
At the UTSA Team Challenge, Pohl set meet and facility records with a heptathlon score of 4736 points. Sitting in second place after four events, she opened day two by leaping a personal-best 5.94 m (19'6) in the long jump. That effort qualified for the ECAC Championships. Pohl also reached the ECAC qualifying mark in the heptathlon. On the men's side, Stefan Hoeller (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) scored 3746 points to place second in the decathlon.
Will Stallings (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) (21.57) and Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) went 5-6 in the men's 200 meters, and Stallings added a 13th-place showing in the 100 meters (11.08). Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.), meanwhile, took fourth in the 400 meters with a 47.70-second clocking.
In the field, Bobby Gebhard (Saddle River, N.J.) finished third in the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.69 m (48'2½), while Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.) placed fourth with a 14.49 m (47'6½) effort. Hayden Clarke (Townsville, Australia) got out to 6.72 m (22'0¾) to earn fifth place in the men's long jump, and Clement Gicquel (Rennes, France) began his outdoor season with a clearance of 2.00 m (6'6¾) in the men's high jump.
After missing most of the indoor season, Lina Bengtson (Malmo, Sweden) started her outdoor campaign well. With a distance of 44.14 m (144'10) in the discus, she grabbed sixth place and achieved the ECAC Championships qualifier. Katharina Klien (Maeder, Austria), who took third in the javelin on Friday, added a ninth-place showing in the shot put (11.10 m, 36'5).
Next weekend, the Jaspers will get a chance to compete at the venue for this year's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Championships when they participate in the Monmouth Invitational. The meet begins on Friday and concludes on Saturday.
