DAYTON, Ohio - Hampton scored the first seven points and never trailed en route to posting a 74-64 win over Manhattan in NCAA First Round Action at the University of Dayton Arena.
In defeat, the Jaspers conclude their season with a 19-14 record and the program's second-straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship while the Pirates improve to 17-17 and will next square off with top-ranked Kentucky in Second Round NCAA play.
Junior Shane Richards (New York, N.Y. / York Prep) scored a team-high 17 points with four rebounds and four assists to lead the way for Manhattan.
Hampton scored the first seven points of the game and was able to open up a 35-23 lead with 3:50 to play until halftime.
The Jasper offense then awoke up with a 8-1 run while getting back into the game. Freshman Calvin Crawford (Middletown, N.Y. / St. Thomas More (Conn.)) got things going with a layup before assisting on a Carlton Allen (So., Ewing, N.J. / Life Center Academy) jumper.
On the defensive end, senior RaShawn Stores (Bronx, N.Y. / Robinson School (N.J.)) corralled one of his three steals on the game before hitting a pair at the line. Following a Pirate free throw, Allen converted a layup off a Richards feed before Quinton Chievous capped the scoring for the half with a jumper as Hampton took a 38-31 halftime lead.
In the opening stanza, the Pirates shot 50.0 percent (15-for-30) from the floor and were led by Chievous' game-high 11 points and 10 rebounds. Manhattan, meanwhile, shot just 33.3 percent (11-for-33), including 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from deep, and was hindered by foul trouble that sent senior Emmy Andujar (Bronx, N.Y. / Rice) and junior Ashton Pankey (Bronx, N.Y. / Maryland) to the bench ear.y in the half.
Paced by Crawford's team-high seven points in the first half, the bench outscored the starters by a 17-14 count while keeping the Jaspers in the game.
After halftime, the teams traded points before Richards canned a three pointer and Pankey hit a layup to bring Manhattan to within one at 46-45 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Jaspers would get as Hampton never let the lead dip below four points over the final nine-plus minutes.
The Pirates would end the game on a 12-6 run over the final 4:30 in picking up their second NCAA Tournament victory by a 74-64 count.
Hampton shot 49.1 percnet (26-for-53) for the game while notching a season-high 20 assists. Manhattan, meanwhile, made good on 37.1 percent (23-for-62), including just 24.0 percent (6-for-25) from distance.
Andujar joined Richards in double-figures with 11 points and eight rebounds while finishing his incredible career with 1,345 points, 769 rebounds, 367 assists and 167 steals. Pankey added nine points and seven rebounds while Stores notched seven points, three steals and two assists.
