WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Manhattan men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-5 non-conference decision to Hartford at the Al-Marzook Athletic Field.
With the loss, the Jaspers fall to 0-5 on the season, while Hartford improves to 1-1.
The Jaspers opened the scoring with a goal from senior Andrew Hurst (Babylon, N.Y. / Babylon) just 21 seconds into the first quarter. Manhattan held the lead for a majority of the opening stanza. Hartford received a man down goal from senior Adam Yee to knot the score at one with 21 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
After Yee netted his second of the game, Hurst responded to make the score 2-2 with 10:35 to play in the first half.
The Hawks then used a 10-0 spurt to end the second and start the third periods in jumping out to what proved to be an insurmountable 12-2 advantage en route to posting the aforementioned 15-5 victory.
The Jaspers halted the spurt with three straight goals. Junior Stephen Farrell (Loudonville, N.Y. / Shaker), Hurst, and senior captain Marcel Godino (Summit, N.J. / Summit) tallied goals during the Manhattan run to bring the team to within seven at 12-5, but that is as close as the team would get. The goals from Hurst and Godino came while the Jaspers were a man up.
Junior midfielder Nick Strano (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point), sophomore Gian Noto (Jacksonville, Fla. / Creekside), sophomore Matt Garvey (Essex Fells, N.J. / West Essex), Godino and Hurst also recorded assists in the contest.
Yee registered a game-high seven points (3G, 4A) in the outing. Senior midfielder Ty Schuldt scored three goals and picked up an assist for the Hawks. Hartford senior defender Brian Monks collected a game-high 11 ground balls.
