Riverdale, NY - Marist overcame an 11-point second-half deficit in posting a 75-70 victory over Manhattan in MAAC action at Draddy Gymnasium.
In defeat, the Jaspers fall to 1-5 and 0-2 in the league while the Red Foxes improve to 2-4 and 1-1 in the circuit.
Senior RaShawn Stores (Bronx, NY / Robinson School) notched a career-high 18 points and junior Rich Williams (Brooklyn, NY / Vermont Academy (VT)) had a game-high 22 points. Classmate Tyler Wilson (Bronx, NY / Cardinal Hayes) was outstanding in facilitating the offense, finishing with a career-high 10 assists, against just one turnover. The 10 helpers are the most by a Manhattan student-athlete since Von Damien Green finished with 10 against Saint Peter's on Jan. 30, 2002
Defensively, sophomore Zane Waterman (Winston-Salem, NC / Fayetteville Academy) pulled down a game and career-high 10 rebounds as the Jaspers won the rebounding battle (28-24) for the first time this season. Waterman also added nine points and three steals while falling one point short of his first career double-double.
In the opening stanza, Manhattan shot a blistering 70.0 percent (14-for-20) from the floor, including making good on 84.6 percent (11-of-13) over the final 12:39, in building up a 37-34 lead at the break. Williams was unstoppable in the first half, converting on all six of his shots, including two from long range, in scoring 15 points.
After halftime, Marist tied the game at 42-42 at the 16:13 mark only to see the Jaspers respond with 11-straight points over the next 3:33. Carlton Allen Jr. (Ewing, NJ / Life Center Academy) converted a three-point play and Williams sank a jumper before Wilson found Williams for an alley oop dunk. After Waterman split a pair at the line, Richards capped the spurt with a three pointer off another Wilson assist while extending the Manhattan advantage to 53-42 with 12:40 to play.
The Red Foxes would answer with a game-changing 20-4 run over the next 7:20 in grabbing a 62-57 lead with 5:20 remaining. Stores responded with a pair of three pointers sandwiched between a Khalid Hart layup in trimming the deficit to one with just over four minutes to play.
Brian Parker hit a pair at the line to extend the Marist lead back to three only to see Waterman connect on a pair from the charity stripe before hitting a jumper to give the Jaspers a 67-66 lead with 3:36 to play.
Unfortunately, that would be the last lead of the day for Manhattan as the Red Foxes ripped off eight-straight points en route to posting the aforementioned 75-70 victory.
The Jaspers shot a solid 46.3 percent (25-for-54) from the field, including 37.5 percent (9-for-24) from deep.
Manhattan will next host Columbia on Wednesday, December 9 at 7:00 pm.
