NEW YORK – Marisa Robbins (Goshen, N.Y.) of the Manhattan College women's indoor track & field team set a new school record in the women's pole vault at the NYC Gotham Cup on Friday. She cleared 3.75 meters (12 feet, 3½ inches) to break Karolin Wagner's mark by one centimeter and place fourth overall among 45 competitors in the event at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center.
Robbins was one of three Jaspers entered in the women's pole vault, and all three finished in the top 20. Maddie Arndt (Merrimack, Mass.) placed 11th and achieved the qualifying standard for the ECAC Championships with a leap of 3.60 m (11'9¾), while Maddesen Weekes (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was 20th with a best effort of 3.30 m (10'10). Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland), meanwhile, ended up fourth in the weigh throw with a toss of 16.62 m (54'6½).
On the men's side, Blerim Pocesta (Staten Island, N.Y.) continued his solid season with a second-place finish in the weight throw. His best mark of the day was a 17.85 m (58'6¾) effort. Love Litzell (Ostersund, Sweden) ended up fourth with a toss of 17.49 m (57'4¾). Clement Gicquel (Rennes, France) added a second-place showing in the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.04 m (6'8¼).
It was also a good day on the track for the men's team. Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) ran in the invitational section of the 1000 meters and placed seventh in 2:40.73. Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) was fourth in the 500 meters (1:03.24) and Will Stallings (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) grabbed seventh place in the 200 meters (22.32). Perrier and Derenoncourt then teamed with Joe Martello (Amawalk, N.Y.) and Justin Alleyne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) to post a time of 3:19.45 in the 4x400 meter relay, which earned them fifth place out of more than 30 entries.
Next week, Manhattan will send athletes to two different meets. The women's squad returns to the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center for the Metro Team Challenge at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, while the men's team will head to Princeton for the Tiger Open on Saturday at 11 a.m.
