NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) of the Manhattan College outdoor track & field team qualified for the IC4A Championships in both the shot put and discus, while Mohamed Koita (Cergy, France) finished first in the men's high jump at the inaugural Mark Young Invitational from Yale University's Dewitt Cuyler Athletic Complex on Saturday. The Jaspers also got an event win from Bobby Gebhard (Saddle River, N.J.) in the 110 meter hurdles.
Kirlys had a personal-best mark of 16.44 meters (53 feet, 11¼ inches) to capture second place in the shot put. In the discus, his 49.57 m (162'7) effort was second overall and tops among collegians. Meanwhile, Koita, an All-American indoors, recorded an IC4A qualifier with his winning clearance at 2.09 m (6'10¼). Manhattan took first and third in the event, as Matt Perrelli (Smithtown, N.Y.) recorded a jump of 1.89 m (6'2¼). Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.) placed fourth in the triple jump (13.98 m, 45'10½), while Savio Paul (Yonkers, N.Y.) finished fourth in the pole vault (4.35 m , 14'3¼).
In the 110 hurdles, Gebhard's time of 15.09 seconds was good for first place. Dennis Eriksson (Sundsvall, Sweden) grabbed fourth place in the event with a time of 15.18 seconds. In the 100 meters, Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) was third (10.89) and Anthony Hall (Mountainville, N.Y.) finished sixth (11.05). Also notching a sixth-place finish was Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.) in the 5000 meters (16:13.53).
On the women's side, Manhattan got a second-place showing from Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) in the 5000 meters (18:34.97). Milena Stoicev (Nis, Serbia) was fifth in the 800 meters (2:17.80), while Katharina Klien (Maeder, Austria) finished seventh in the javelin (35.32 m, 115'10). In addition, Breanna Brucher (Glen Spey, N.Y.) placed eighth in the women's pole vault (3.25 m, 10'8).
Next weekend, Koita and Kirlys will be among Manhattan's contingent at the prestigious Penn Relays, which take place Thursday-Saturday from the legendary Franklin Field in Philadelphia. The rest of the squad will compete in the Lions Invitational at the College of New Jersey on Saturday.
