LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – After four weather-related postponements, the Manhattan College softball team finally took on Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Siena on Friday afternoon. The Jaspers (15-21, 5-5 MAAC) saw their six-game winning streak snapped with an 8-2 loss in the opener, then Siena (19-16, 7-1 MAAC) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to post a 6-5 victory in game two at the Siena Softball Field.
The first-place Saints struck right away in game one, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the first. Siena loaded the bases before Chelsey Drew ripped a two-run single. After Jordan Sandrini walked, Megan Volz singled home another run, giving the Saints a 3-0 cushion. Siena added an unearned tally in the second, but the Jaspers countered with two in the top of the third.
Kate Bowen (Newtown, Conn.) started the rally with a one-out single. She moved to second on an Elena Bowman (San Mateo, Calif.) walk, then scored when Jenn Vazquez (Fairfield, Conn.) reached on an error with two outs. After Andi Stallard (Katy, Texas) walked to load the bases, Stephanie Reinhardt (Albany, N.Y.) drew a walk to force in another run and cut Manhattan's deficit to 4-2.
Siena picked up another run on Paige Lloyd's two-out double in the bottom of the third. After a Volz single in the fourth made it 6-2, the Jaspers loaded the bases in the top of the fifth. However, Mickayla Romero (Las Vegas, Nev.) grounded out to end the inning, then the Saints added two more on a Drew single in the bottom of the fifth. That was more than enough for starting pitcher Jessika-Jo Sandrini, who limited Manhattan to just five hits in the 8-2 victory.
Vazquez was the only Jasper with two hits in the game, while Reinhardt recorded Manhattan's only RBI. Bowen and Bowman each scored a run. Bowen (8-6) also got the start in the circle and took the loss. She gave up six runs (five earned) and nine hits, struck out one and walked two in three innings. Danielle Gabriel (Island Heights, N.J.) tossed the final three innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out two and walking two.
Five different Saints had two hits in the contest, as Siena recorded 12 hits as a team. Drew finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs, while Volz went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair. Abby Carpenter was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Jessika-Jo Sandrini scored three runs after going 2-for-2 at the plate. In addition, Jessika-Jo Sandrini (14-6) picked up her MAAC-leading 14th win of the season after yielding just two unearned runs and five hits in a complete game effort. She also struck out five and walked six.
In game two, Siena again took an early lead on Drew's RBI single in the bottom of the first. However, the Jaspers countered with a four-spot in the top of the second. Stallard drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an error. After Emily Cutler (Bloomingdale, N.J.) walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and chase Jessika-Jo Sandrini (who started both games), Bowen smacked a two-run single that put Manhattan up 4-1.
The Saints got one back in the bottom of the second before the Jaspers made it 5-2 when Bowen scored on an infield single by Vazquez in the fourth. Jessika-Jo Sandrini smacked a two-run single in the bottom half of the inning to pull Siena within 5-4, then tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the sixth.
Manhattan put two on with one out in the top of the seventh when Vazquez singled and Stallard reached on an error. The runners moved up to second and third on a Reinhardt groundout, but Romero grounded out to end the inning.
Drew led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. Gabriel, who had come in for Amy Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) after the hit, then got the first two outs before hitting Mikaela Searight with a pitch. The winning run moved to third on a passed ball, then Gabriel threw a wild pitch, allowing pinch runner Bridget Connors to score and give Siena a 6-5 victory.
Once again, Vazquez was the only Manhattan player with a multi-hit effort in game two. She finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bowen ended up 1-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and two RBIs. Bright (6-11) took the loss after tossing six-plus innings in the circle. She yielded six runs (five earned) on 10 hits, struck out three and walked four. Gabriel pitched the final 0.2 innings.
For Siena, Paige Lloyd went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the nine spot. Jessika-Jo Sandrini, meanwhile, was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Drew finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. After Jessika-Jo Sandrini started and went an inning-plus, allowing four runs (three earned) on one hit with three walks and a strikeout, Antonia Edwards tossed the next two innings. She surrendered just two hits and a walk. Danielle Cacciola (3-4) gave up one run on two hits while striking out one and walking one over four innings to earn the win.
The Jaspers are back in action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Rider (4-29, 2-6 MAAC).
