RIVERDALE, N.Y. – At the Draddy Invitational on Saturday, Mohamed Koita (Cergy, France) and Ida Virdebrant (Nobbelle, Sweden) of the Manhattan College indoor track & field team broke their own school records in the high jump. This is the second time this season that Koita and Virdebrant established a new mark in the same meet on their home mat. They each broke their old record, set on Dec. 15, by one centimenter, with Koita raising his mark to 2.20 meters (seven feet, 2½ inches), and Virdebrant clearing 1.80 m (5'10¾).
With his effort, Koita moved into seventh place on this season's NCAA list. Virdebrant is now 16th in the nation. The athletes with the top 12 marks in each event will earn places at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M, on March 14-15.
Other top performers on Saturday included Justin Farrenkopf (Ellenville, N.Y.), who won the men's pole vault with a leap of 4.65 m (15'3), Hayden Clarke (Townsville, Australia), who took first in the men's long jump (6.92 m, 22'8½) and Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania), whose effort of 16.00 m (52'6) was good for first place in the men's shot put. On the track, the Jaspers got victories from Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) in the 60 meters (7.01), David Lothrop (South Nyack, N.Y.) in the 200 meters (23.38) and Dennis Eriksson (Sundsvall, Sweden) in the 60 meter hurdles (8.72).
For the women, Marisa Robbins (Goshen, N.Y.) took first in the pole vault (3.30 m, 10'10), Kathy Cadet (Endicott, N.Y.) won the 400 meters (59.10), Milena Stoicev (Nis, Serbia) was first in the 800 meters (2:15.98), and Meghan Hayes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned the win in the 1500 meters (5:15.45). In addition, Lina Bengtson (Malmo, Sweden) was the top collegiate finisher in the women's shot put, placing second overall with a toss of 13.58 m (44'6¾).
The 107th Millrose Games were also held this weekend at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center. Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland) was seventh in the women's weight throw with a personal-best effort of 17.59 m (57'8½). Meanwhile, Jake Freeman, a former eight-time All-American at Manhattan, won the men's weight throw for the eighth time in his career.
This weekend's meets marked Manhattan's final competition before the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships. The Jasper men seek their 18th consecutive MAAC indoor title, while the women's team is looking for its first conference title since 2010. Competition begins at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center at 4 p.m. on Friday.
