RIVERDALE, N.Y. – On Saturday, the Manhattan College men's and women's indoor track & field teams concluded the fall semester by hosting the Brother Jasper Invitational at Draddy Gymnasium. Competing at home for the second straight week, the Jaspers put forth a solid showing, led by Blerim Pocesta's (Staten Island, N.Y.) personal-best performance in the weight throw.
Pocesta got out to 18.78 meters (61 feet, 7½ inches) on his final throw of the competition, which gave him the victory over Puerto Rican national team member Wilfredo DeJesus. That effort was also the 18th-best mark in the NCAA this season. Earlier in the meet, Pocesta took second in the shot put, getting out to a distance of 14.91 m (48'11).
Savio Paul (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Matthew Pluhowski (East Patchogue, N.Y.) grabbed second and third place in the pole vault after leaping 4.80 m (15'9) and 4.05 m (13'3½), respectively. Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.), meanwhile, was third in the triple jump. His top mark of 14.04 m (46'0¾) was equal to that of the second-place finisher, but Moxey was awarded third place because of his second-best jump.
Sprinters Anthony Hall (Mountainville, N.Y.) and Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) both had good days, as well. Hall (7.09) was third and Myrtil (7.11) was fifth in the 60 meters, while Myrtil (22.97) took fourth and Hall sixth (23.07) in the 200 meters. Stefan Hoeller (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) registered a time of 8.65 seconds to finish third in the 60 meter hurdles, his third event of the day. Hoeller also placed fifth in the long jump (6.50 m, 21'4) and 10th in the high jump (1.79 m, 5'10½).
Despite entering athletes in just five events, the women's team also had a solid showing with two first-place and two second-place finishes. Paige Chapman (Abingdon, Md.) posted an impressive time of 7.82 seconds to win the 60, while Marisa Robbins (Goshen, N.Y.) took first in the pole vault for the second time in as many weeks. Her best leap on Saturday was 3.60 m (11'9¾). In addition, Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland) took second in the weight throw with a toss of 16.66 m (54'8) and Katharina Klien (Maeder, Austria) was second in the shot put (12.28 m, 40'3½).
The Jaspers will now have a month off before returning to action. A selection of athletes from the men's team will compete at the Army Five-Way Meet on Jan. 10, while the whole men's and women's squads will be together for the first time at the NYC Gotham Cup on Jan. 16.
