ATHENS, Ohio – Entering Sunday, Ohio was ranked third nationally in three-pointers, averaging nearly 12 per game. And the Bobcats used their long range prowess again in their matchup with the Manhattan College women's basketball team. Ohio (5-0) sank 15 treys and shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from downtown en route to an 82-58 victory over the Jaspers (1-4) at the Convocation Center.
After Ohio scored the first basket of the game, Manhattan took a 3-2 lead on a three-pointer by Nyasha Irizarry (Brooklyn, N.Y.). However, the Bobcats countered with an 11-4 spurt to go up 13-7 at the 13:38 mark of the first half. A Shayna Ericksen (Long Valley, N.J.) brought the Jaspers within four at 13-9 before Ohio went on a 25-8 run to open up a 38-17 advantage with 3:34 left before halftime. The Jaspers got a layup from Kayla Grimme (Altoona, Pa.) and an Alex Cohen (Nashua, N.H.) three-pointer to trim their deficit to 16, but the Bobcats scored the final seven points of the half to take 45-22 cushion into the locker room. Ohio sank nine three-pointers and shot a combined 52.9 percent (18-of-34) in the first half.
Ohio increased its lead to 27 points, 52-25, early in the second half before the Jaspers went on a 9-3 run, capped by a Cohen trey, to get back within 21 at 55-34 with 15:06 to go. However, it would get no closer, as the Bobcats immediately countered with an 11-1 rally to make it a 30-point game, 65-35, with 9:27 left. After the margin reached a game-high 32 points at 80-48 with 2:58 remaining, the Jaspers ended the contest by scoring 10 of the final 12 points. A three-ball by Maeve Parahus (Congers, N.Y.) as time expired made the final difference 24 points, as Manhattan suffered its third straight loss, 82-58.
Ericksen paced the Jaspers with 15 points, and she added seven rebounds. Jacqui Thompson (Southampton, Pa.) tallied nine points and three assists, while Grimme had eight points to go along with a career-high 12 boards. Taylor Williams (Windsor, Conn.) also registered eight points for Manhattan, which outrebounded Ohio 34-29. The Jaspers shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field, 30 percent (6-of-20) from three-point land, and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) at the free throw line.
Mariah Byard sank eight three-pointers for the Bobcats and finished with 24 points. Lexie Baldwin, meanwhile, went 7-for-7 from the field and recorded 16 points. Hannah Boesinger added 12 points, while Kelly Karlis tallied nine points on three treys. Quinera Lampkins grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with six assists, and Kat Yelle also distributed six helpers. The Bobcats went 31-for-56 (55.4 percent) from the floor and 5-for-11 (45.5 percent) at the charity stripe.
The Jaspers (0-0 MAAC) continue their five-game road trip on Friday night, when they begin their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule with a 7 p.m. matchup at Canisius (1-3, 0-0 MAAC). Manhattan swept the season series with the Griffs in 2013-14. It will be the Jaspers' earliest MAAC opener since 2008-09.
NOTES: Manhattan met Ohio for just the second time in program history, and the all-time series is now tied 1-1…The Jaspers' only previous game in the State of Ohio was a 73-71 win over Wright State on March 20, 2011 in the quarterfinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational…For the first time this season, Manhattan used a starting lineup that had been used previously, as the starting five from opening night (Thompson, Williams, Irizarry, Ericksen, Grimme) began the game on the floor...The Jaspers outrebounded their opponent for the second time this season...Grimme set a career-high in rebounds for the second straight game…Sheridan Heine (Corning, N.Y.) recorded the first two points and the first block of her collegiate career in the contest…Ohio's 15 three-pointers were the most by a Manhattan opponent since Loyola drained 15 on Jan. 2, 2011…The Ohio men's team hosted Belmont on Saturday night, and several members of the Manhattan staff attended the game.
