RIVERDALE, N.Y. - After conceding a goal off a set piece in the 70th minute, the Manhattan men's soccer team could not find an equalizer, and dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest to Canisius, 1-0, at Gaelic Park on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Jaspers move to 1-10-2 on the fall and 0-6-1 in conference play. The Golden Griffs improve to 8-6-2 overall, including a 3-4-2 mark against MAAC opponents.
The lone goal of the match came off the head of Canisius senior defender A.C. LaFlore. The Golden Griffs won a corner kick in the 70th minute that junior defender Alex De Carolis swung near post. As the ball was sinking toward the turf, LaFlore sprung forward to send a powerful header inside the near post to beat Jaspers sophomore keeper Alex Coates McDowall and provide Canisius with a 1-0 lead. The score would hold up the rest of the way.
Manhattan managed a number of scoring chances over the 90 minutes of play. Perhaps the two best Jaspers opportunities came from sophomore forward Daniel Laguna Kennedy.
In the 15th minute, the sophomore saw his effort saved by Canisius junior keeper Andrew Coughlin. The junior couldn't handle the attempt cleanly and the ball trickled out of play for a Manhattan corner.
Much later in the match, in the 89th minute, Manhattan swung a ball far post in the area of Laguna Kennedy. The sophomore leapt above the Golden Griffs back line and sent a powerful header over the bar.
Jasper seniors Eugene Heerschap and Tommy Amos picked up yellow cards in the second half, while the Canisius keeper, Coughlin, was cautioned for stalling in the 89th minute.
Manhattan returns to action on Wednesday night, when the squad hosts Saint Peter's for a MAAC meeting at Gaelic Park. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Jaspers will wear pink laces during the game as a way to raise breast cancer awareness.
