BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden) finished first overall to lead the Manhattan College men's cross country team to a second-place showing at the LIU Post Invitational on Saturday. The Jasper women also captured second place in the team standings.
Running the full distance of 8000 meters for the first time this season, Rojeras posted a time of 25:34.37 to beat 134 other competitors in the field. Manhattan's No. 2 finisher was Stephen Chantry (Williamsburg, Va.), who placed 10th in 26:15.97. Kevin O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.) crossed the line 14th in 26:28.03, while Anthony Colasurdo's (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) time of 26:30.70 was good enough for 16th place. Completing the Jaspers' top seven were Shane Beyer (Brick, N.J.) (21st, 26:39.54), Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) (30th, 27:05.33) and Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.) (45th, 27:52.48).
With Division I, II and III squads, as well as a few junior colleges, competing, the team standings were broken down by division. On the Division I side, Manhattan placed behind only Fordham. The Jaspers finished with 31 points to the Rams' 24.
On the women's side, Milena Stoicev (Nis, Serbia) was Manhattan's top finisher. She completed the 5000-meter course in 18:48.45 to capture fifth place overall. Katie Saroka (Blue Point, NY.) took 13th place with a time of 19:10.31, while Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) was 17th in 19:26.08. Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) posted a time of 19:55.99, which was good for 26th place. Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) and Alyssa Windle (Redlands, Calif.) crossed the line virtually together. Rosenberger finished 36th in 20:17.35, followed by Windle in 37th (20:17.67). Christina Sakowski (Cicero, N.Y.) rounded out Manhattan's scorers with a 44th-place showing (20:28.64).
Just like the men, there was a separate team competition for the Division I women's squads. Fordham also took first place on the women's side with 28 points. Manhattan and St. John's both tallied 46 points, but the Jaspers were credited with second place because their team score was lower (81-87) when sixth- and seventh-place finishers were taken into account.
After traveling to Long Island for their first three meets of the year, the Jaspers will head across the street to Van Cortlandt Park for five of their remaining six competitions. Manhattan participates in the annual Iona Meet of Champions at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
