RIVERDALE, N.Y. - With its regularly-scheduled meet for this weekend, Boston University's St. Valentine Invitational, cancelled due to the blizzard, the Manhattan College indoor track & team instead welcomed Saint Peter's and NJIT to Draddy Gymnasium for a tri-meet on Saturday.
The meet served as Manhattan's final tune-up before next weekend's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, and several Jaspers showed their readiness with standout performances. Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.) had perhaps the most impressive effort of the day. He won the high jump with a season-best clearance of 2.04 meters (six feet, 8¼ inches). With that performance, Carroll qualified for the IC4A Championships.
The Jaspers claimed the top five places in the men's pole vault, with Tom Bechert (Munich, Germany) and Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) both clearing 4.80 m (15'9) to tie for first. Bechert then claimed third place in the triple jump with a mark of 13.16 m (43'2¼). Bobby Gebhard (Saddle River, N.J.) was second in the triple jump, leaping 13.73 m (45'0½). Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) won the shot put with a toss of 15.28 m (50'1¾), while Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) took first in the weight throw (17.83 m, 58'6).
On the track, Shane Beyer (Brick, N.J.) had a pair of solid showings. He took second in the 3000 meters (9:34.52) and was third in the mile (4:49.49), just behind teammate Kevin O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.) (4:49.41). In addition, Nick Italiano (New York, N.Y.) grabbed second place in the 800 meters (2:03.20).
The Manhattan women also had a strong day. Alyssa Windle (Redlands, Calif.) won the 3000 meters in 11:04.35 and placed third in the mile (5:42.54), just edging Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) in each event (3000-11:04.42, mile-5:42.56). Meanwhile, Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) captured first place in the 800 meters (2:23.76) and Milena Stoicev (Nis, Serbia) finished first in the 1000 meters (3:05.86).
In the women's long jump, Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden) grabbed second place with a leap of 5.64 m (18'6), while Alina Koenigs (Moenchengladbach, Germany) took fourth in the women's triple jump (10.95 m, 35'11¼). Koenigs also finished second in the shot put (12.00 m, 39'4½). Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland), meanwhile, placed second in the weight throw (15.72 m, 51'7).
Up next for Manhattan is the MAAC Indoor Championships from the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Friday night. The Jasper men are the defending MAAC champions, while the women's squad finished second in 2012. Competition gets underway at 6 p.m., and a live webcast will be available on maacsports.com.
